Having one of those reflective kind of days. I must say, I very much miss the seafood industry. But, I am also very concerned about it. There has been a massive amount of attention raised around everything from IUU fishing, to forced labor, to the efficacy of various seafood and fishery certifications, to the legality and authenticity of products... Yes, I am responsible for some of that attention. And also yes, I would do it again. Seafood is wonderful and awesome and ever evolving. Challenging and fun. And the industry is far bigger than the issues that have been raised recently. But I find myself wondering how much the industry really wants to move forward and improve things. If doing the right thing and laying it all out there for the world to see... If trying to drive change and better the industry from top to bottom basically gets you locked out of the entire industry, then what does that say about the industry itself? I don't know. What I do know is that before my whistleblowing, I was getting calls and emails on a regular basis trying to recruit me. Now I don't even get the courtesy of a rejection email. Fortunately, there are plenty of other food sectors.

In 2017, the Canadian egg industry publicly committed to phasing out battery cages by 2036. But instead of going cage-free, many farms and egg companies are switching to slightly larger “enriched” cages. One of these companies is Burnbrae Farms—Canada’s largest egg supplier.  Burnbrae’s packaging fails to show the truth about where the company’s eggs come from. Its Naturegg Nestlaid labels feature images of green open-air pastures and happy cartoon eggs. In reality, the Nestlaid line sources eggs from hens forced to live in cruel enriched cages. The Outlaw Ocean Project and other experts continue to expose unthinkable atrocities in global seafood supply chains, including inhumane working conditions, neglect, murder, debt bondage, forced sterilizations, illegal antibiotic use…and the list goes on.  And guess what? Four big feed producers - MOWI , Skretting, Cargill and Biomar - supply almost all of the feed used in Norwegian farmed salmon. All extract wild-fish from Northwest Africa, a region facing acute food insecurity, to produce fish oil.
