The Congenital Heart Futures Reauthorization Act of 2024 was signed today by President Biden. We would like to thank all those who helped write letters and meet with their representatives that gave this bill the momentum it needed. #chdadvocacy #chdawareness

November is #EpilepsyAwarenessMonth. The Queen's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center aims to keep patients safe during seizures. Follow these tips from the Epilepsy Foundation: Stay, Safe, Side: 1. STAY with the person until they are awake and alert. 2. Keep them SAFE by removing nearby dangers. 3. Turn them on their SIDE to keep the airway clear. Call 9-1-1 if the seizure lasts over 5 minutes, they don't return to normal, or have trouble breathing. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g8KicNRq

According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) 30,000 people have a cardiac arrest each year. Fewer than one in ten of these people will survive. Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time - and without warning. Knowing how to perform CPR could double someone's chances of surviving it. We hear from real-life heroes who've saved lives through CPR. Their stories highlight the vital importance of learning this life-saving skill 👉 https://okt.to/glNH6U

In the face of a compliant Congress and judiciary, we still have one line of defense against the worst excesses of the incoming administration: civil society. In other words: us. Civil society stopped the first Trump administration in its tracks, over and over again. Civil society groups must rise up again. We must (1) COMMUNICATE our goals; (2) ENERGIZE our constituencies; and (3) ACT fast to empower the vulnerable. (1) COMMUNICATE. Progressive organizations must clearly and loudly state who they're fighting for, who they're fighting against, and what they plan to accomplish in the coming months and years. We must put this administration on notice that we plan to put up a fight. (2) ENERGIZE. This administration is counting on us to be exhausted. So organizations must energize their allies and constituencies. This was never going to be a one-and-done victory--saving democracy is our lifelong task. We must fire up our supporters for the marathon ahead. (3) ACT. We must act quickly to protect and empower our most vulnerable communities, and ensure no one gets left behind. We've been here before and we know how to do this. So keep your sleeves rolled up and your spirits high.

A society that makes it easier to die than to find an apartment or a doctor (as is the case in parts of Canada) has lost something fundamental about what it means to be a society at all. One person put it this way, “I don’t want to die but I don’t want to be homeless MORE than I don’t want to die.” Despite receiving considerable media attention, these cautionary tales do not appear to have soured the public. In one survey, 51 percent of Canadians endorsed “inability to receive medical treatment” as sufficient enough reason for an assisted death. And who could be unaware that finding ongoing medical treatment is difficult for many in Canada? (emergency care is easily available. But as an EP I can assure you, that is NOT optimal in a continuing care vaccuum.) Worse, Canadians providers are REQUIRED to tell supplicants that if they cannot find the social, mobility, medical, or other supports that they need to sustain a meaningful life in Canada that "Medically Abetted Dying" (which is euphemistically called something else up here) is always an option for them to consider. So what do compliant, disabled, depressed or disadvantaged Canadians who are unaware of their basic humanitarian rights choose: continue to fight the system, or "request" a needle? 45,000 per year (and rising at 30% per year) are now doing the latter, according to this (gifted) opinion by Shadi Hamid in the WAPO. And other politically correct and terminally polite Canadians are unwilling to speak up about the injustice, even while it disturbs them. Making waves is not the societal norm. Sadly, in a system of government sponsored healthcare there is a perverse incentive to enhance the euthanasia option. In BC, seniors pay nothing for healthcare. One nearby health services unit (Fraser Valley) sends pamphlet describing its euthanasia program in rosy terms to all pensioners ("you don't even have to pay the costs!") Health Canada has even published a coloring book explaining how it works, to grandchildren. How a physician can administer death to a non terminally ill patient, and go home and sleep with themselves is beyond my comprehension.

A child with a hammer sees everything as a nail. Nothing is off-limits to that child. A child with power can do a lot of damage. You know. You have seen the school yard bully yourself as a child. They have no remorse for the pain they inflict. They just laugh. Jordan Peterson’s recent National Post op-ed points out that 5 % of the population consists of those with the “Dark Tetrad personality traits — the manipulators, narcissists, psychopaths and sadists” who are now given the hammer of the internet — where they “can give full expression to their worst impulses online, invading every space of commentary with their purposefully hurtful, bitter and vengeful provocation, aiming precisely at spreading the grief and misery their vengeful souls wish to perpetrate on the world.” There can be no doubt that protecting the public from such individuals doing their worst online is laudable. These people need to be bridled so that they are unable to run havoc in our society. Evil has been given full sway online and it does not stay online. It often manifests itself in our streets. We have reason to be concerned about online hatred. However, is Bill C-63 the Online Harms Bill the appropriate tool to address the problem? Or, is it itself a hammer given to government that will now see everything as a nail? This is the first video of many Barry is making on the dangers of Bill C-63. This is a Bill that simply must not become law. It must be stopped in its current form. You can help! Sign our petition today – https://lnkd.in/ezB-sb54 Watch here: https://lnkd.in/e3ganZ4u
