Do you remember that viral video of a surgical robot stitching a grape back together? That video was uploaded almost 10 years ago. Since then, the field of robotic surgery experienced massive growth in terms of technological capabilities, investments and the number of robots deployed worldwide. These sophisticated medical machines promise to make surgeries less invasive, accelerate the recovery and healing process and enable patients to return to their normal lives more quickly. Surgeons are offered a new way of performing surgeries with robots that provide unprecedented access to the human body and tools that feel like extensions of their own hands. Hospitals can also benefit from increased patient turnaround and from the perception of being at the forefront of medical technology by having some of the most advanced medical devices available. At least that’s what the advocates of surgical robots say. Check out my latest article on robotic-assisted surgery, what difference the surgical robots promise to make and what the reality actually looks like here: https://lnkd.in/e-cPjzMS #robotics #medicalrobotics #roboticsurgery #medtech

Dr Gareth Blades shares some further thoughts on the transformative impact of robotic surgery: In March, the FDA approved the fifth generation of the market leading robotic assisted surgery system, da Vinci robot made by Intuitive Surgical Inc. Links to videos below give a glimpse of what is possible with this technology. The new fifth generation da Vinci robot will likely take it a step further. Robotic assisted surgery is already a large and growing field: Intuitive Surgical's installed base is over 8,600 robots with 2.29m procedures completed in 2023. This means that every minute of the past year ~4 procedures were performed on a da Vinci system. Robotic assisted surgery improves patient outcomes: shorter stays in hospital, fewer complications and faster recovery. This has driven the adoption of robotic surgery, despite its additional cost over traditional open and laparoscopic options. While granular detail about the new platform hasn't been released, the improvements over the previous generation are impressive. One of the more material upgrades is that the new da Vinci will have 10,000 times more processing power than the last generation. This enables with what the company describes as Surgical Data Science. Surgery video, robot telemetry and patient outcome data collected by the systems will be used to deliver actionable insights to surgeons, their teams and hospital administrations. As an example, surgeons can understand what their better performing peers are doing to achieve faster operations and better patient outcomes. As the data and insight ecosystem builds, the value of these Surgical Data Science applications could accrue to improved total cost of ownership, return on investment and improved patient outcomes. As more details are released about the fifth generation system, it will be exciting to see how these capabilities progress. If you would like to find out more about robotic assisted surgery, please refer to our recent Amati Insight’s Call from Tuesday 26th March - https://lnkd.in/ew-x5598 'Introducing da Vinci 5: our most advanced and integrated system ever' - https://lnkd.in/gDuhUxmx 'Can AI make surgery safer?' - https://lnkd.in/esKqD2fS #roboticsurgery #healthcareinnovation #surgicaladvancements #davincirobot Warning: Capital at risk. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Surgical robotics has been a developing field for some time now, but early devices failed to substantially improve patient outcomes over traditional methods. However, after constant iteration and rapid improvements to AI technology, robotic surgery is becoming increasingly viable, offering increased range of motion, enhanced dexterity, and improved ergonomics for surgeons. That said, robotics' high upfront cost, maintenance, and training has dampened adoption rates, and while interest has picked up considerably over the past few years, it will likely be some time before the tech sees widespread adoption. As the technology continues to improve though, its benefits will be difficult to ignore. #SurgicalServices #RoboticSurgery #DigitalTransformation
