End Violence Against Women Coalition experts warn Ofcom are blocking a safer internet for women… 44 VAWG specialists and experts penned an open letter to Ofcom's CEO, Dame Melanie Dawes, raising concerns about the regulator's approach to combating illegal online content. They critique Ofcom for prioritising tech companies' concerns over the severe and disproportionate harm suffered by women and girls due to stalking, harassment, and image-based sexual abuse. The coalition calls out Ofcom for its business-centric approach, lack of preventive measures, ambiguous definition of illegal content, and overemphasis on reporting as a measure of harm. They argue that Ofcom's approach fails to address the broader societal impact of online violence against women and girls, including those from marginalised communities. GBV, in all its forms, must be eradicated. This includes strengthening legal frameworks, holding tech platforms accountable, empowering women through digital literacy and providing essential support services for victims. Governments, CSOs and international bodies must work together to create safer digital spaces, where women are free from harassment, abuse and exploitation. By aligning laws with international human rights standards, enhancing victim support and promoting regional cooperation, we can nurture an environment where women are protected and empowered online. https://lnkd.in/dEXwJKkm #DigitalGenderJustice #FeministInternet #EndCyberHarassment #SafeOnlineSpaces #OnlineAbuse #16DaysOfActivism #EndGenderBasedViolence #NoToViolence

"There is a culture of normalising abuse towards women and girls when they experience online violence, society often questions what they did to warrant this kind of violence." This is an excerpt from an investigative article published by OMARI NYAKERARIO A well written piece that explores how social media platforms have made violence and harrasment easy to perpetrate and difficult to investigate. "what is considered trolling by a section of internet users can be regarded as online humor by another.." Kindly have a read! New research from the Dutch NGO Rutgers found that 38% of women worldwide reported personal experiences with online violence. https://lnkd.in/eYFH624a Women, children, and members of the LGBTIQ+ community are most commonly targets of exploitation, harassment, and abuse. Some of these activities, such as the distribution of child sexual abuse material and non-consensual intimate content, are criminal offences. Some instances of online harassment can also be prosecuted under criminal law, while others are not considered criminal or even unlawful behaviour. Regardless of their legal status, many instances of online harassment cause psychological harm and have a chilling effect on victims. Our 2023 report, Vulnerable Connections, explores the challenges and opportunities related to the regulation, prevention, investigation, prosecution, and countering of cyber-enabled crimes and harms in Canada. It details the complex social and legal issues underpinning digital public safety and the importance of accountable approaches to addressing cyber-enabled crimes and harms. https://bit.ly/3HHGzGZ

The revolution in information technology has provided a digital space that is easy to access, cost-effective, and democratic; however, over the decades, cyberspace has also witnessed the increasing menace of cybercrime. The legal and policy framework in India is insufficient to deal with the increasing cyberviolence against women or to end the online culture of misogyny. While reflecting on the available secondary data, this work suggests reconsidering the connection between laws, policies, and cyberspaces from a feminist perspective to prevent and eliminate all forms of online violence against women. This was discussed in the legal hands-on session in the certificate online course on violence against women organized by #IMPRI. I would like to thank the IMPRI team, Dr. Arjun Kumar and Dr. Simi Mehta for providing the platform. I express special gratitude to Professor Dr Vibhuti Patel, the chairperson of the course and the participants for their valuable suggestions. Special thanks are also due to Vititha and Asthaba Jadeja for editing this work. #cyberviolence #violenceagainstwomen #genderjustice #womensrights https://lnkd.in/gbZyrUmN

🌍💔 Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Violence against women remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations, impacting 1 in 3 women globally. It manifests not only in physical and sexual violence but increasingly in online spaces, where digital violence is rising at alarming rates. 💻 Cyber violence includes threats, harassment, image-based abuse and forgeries, and it is not separate from offline violence. It is deeply interconnected and rooted in systemic inequality between women and men. It silences women, isolates survivors, and denies them access to safe digital spaces - a critical part of today’s world. 🌐 On this important day, we urge everyone to take action to: 👉 Challenge violence against women and girls in all its forms, online and offline. 👉 Advocate for the transposition of the EU Directive on violence against women, which addresses cyber violence as a crime. 👉 Hold Big Tech accountable to create safer, more inclusive platforms for all users. Together, we can demand a future where no woman has to fear violence—neither in her home, her workplace, nor online. 💪 Join us in these #16Days to raise awareness and inspire action. Together, we can #OrangeTheWorld and #EndVAW once and for all. Let’s make change happen, because women and girls everywhere deserve a life free from violence. 💖 #16DaysOfActivism #InternationalDayToEndVAW

Technology is a double-edged sword,it can amplify voices for justice, but it can also be used to silence them. I remember hearing about a woman who used social media to escape an abusive marriage. Her anonymous post reached a local #NGO, which helped her find safety. This is the power of digital platforms, they connect, educate, and protect. But there’s a darker side. Online violence, harassment, threats, and cyberbullying, often targets women, silencing their voices. It is a reminder that while technology is a tool, it’s up to us to use it responsibly. We must create safe online spaces, report abuse, and use social media for advocacy and education. Every hashtag, post, and campaign counts in the fight against #GBV. How can we make digital spaces safer for women while using them for advocacy? #Day8 #16DaysActivism #StopViolence #NoExcuse #DigitalAdvocacy #GenderEquality #SocialImpact #SDG5

Online Abuse Against Women: Time to Act The rise of online abuse against women is a concerning trend that cannot be ignored. The recent article from Press and Journal sheds light on the experiences of women facing violence and harassment on social media platforms. It's alarming how this behavior is becoming increasingly prevalent, especially towards women in public roles. As a society, we must take action to address this issue. The "Halt the Hate" campaign is a step in the right direction(my opinion). It's time to raise awareness, hold perpetrators accountable, and create safer online spaces for everyone. What else can we do to combat online abuse and create a more inclusive and respectful digital world?⚖️ #HaltTheHate #OnlineAbuse #GenderEquality https://lnkd.in/eB8BvCvG

Digital violence and abuse has real-world impact. We cannot separate our digital and offline lives. During #16DaysofActivism we reiterate our call to governments, legislators and decision-makers to ensure that digital space is safe and accessible to all who use it, and that laws and regulations to prevent #TFGBV and online abuse, as well as measures to bring justice to survivors, are prioritized at the highest levels. It's Day 3 of the #16DaysofActivism Against Gender-Based Violence. "The violence is real, even when it's virtual." Online abuse includes cyberstalking, sexual harassment, grooming for exploitation or abuse, image-based sexual abuse (‘revenge porn’), rape threats, doxxing, tech abuse in intimate partnerships, and much more. But what is "Doxxing"? This was a new one on me. This is when personal identifying information about an individual is made public, typically via the internet, and without that person's consent, with a mind to cause distress or create malicious intent. While this is a virtual act, the impact on victims is very real and can be just as harmful as any gender-based violence against women and girls. #16days #endviolenceagainstwomenandgirls
