Along the Colorado-Wyoming border, hotter, dryer summers and recent megafires have threatened the vulnerable water supply of the Colorado River basin. To address this crisis, forest and river managers, conservation organizations, water districts, and family ranches have formed a new coalition, the Headwaters of the Colorado Initiative. The coalition has brought its divergent perspectives to tackle tough questions playing out on a rural western landscape facing catastrophic wildfire, such as: How much does the forest need fire to be healthy? To what extent should timber harvesting be encouraged to support the local economy, and how much vegetation should be left on the ground? The Headwaters of the Colorado Initiative has engaged CBI to help it answer these and other questions. You can read more about this work in our latest "CBI in Action": https://lnkd.in/eAnH8-RN

We believe that every person has a right to clean, safe, abundant water, which is why we are so proud to be one of the inaugural members of the new initiative, "The America the Beautiful Freshwater Challenge." This new partnership to conserve and restore our country's rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands will support states and other governments and entities, including Tribes, who are advancing their own policies and strategies for conserving our freshwater systems. Our nation's lakes, rivers, streams, estuaries, and wetlands are fundamental to our communities' health, prosperity, and resilience and are held sacred by many Tribal Nations. This new initiative is critically needed now when protections for some of our most important waters are being rolled back. We are grateful to all the partners working to pursue this important new national goal to conserve and restore freshwater resources. https://lnkd.in/eEV8NCva

Tribal Nations play a critical role in addressing water scarcity issues throughout the Colorado River Basin. In 2023, a historic agreement was reached between the Jicarilla Apache Nation, New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (ISC), and The Nature Conservancy, allowing the ISC to lease up to 20,000 acre-feet of water per year from the Nation to benefit threatened/endangered fish and increase water security for New Mexico. The future is looking brighter for the Ohio River! The 981-mile Ohio River and its tributaries are critical resources for communities in the entire Ohio River Basin. Public drinking water, river transportation, commerce, industry, outdoor recreation and tourism. In 2023 American Rivers named the Ohio River among America's most endangered rivers, which means that without taking basin-scale preservation and restoration measures it could fall into the imperiled category. The Ohio River Basin Alliance will hold its annual Day on Capitol Hill, meeting with Members of Congress to educate and advocate for dedicated, permanent federal funding to support the ecological restoration of the Ohio River. Preserving and enhancing the Ohio River's water quality, recreational value and economic vitality is a worthy goal. #ohioriver #ohioriverbasin #ecologicalrestoration

Recent reports highlight the critical state of Tennessee's beloved Duck River, once celebrated as one of the most biodiverse waterways in North America. Named the third-most endangered river in the U.S., the Duck River faces unprecedented threats due to unsustainable water use and rampant development along its banks. Home to a staggering array of aquatic life, including 22 aquatic snail, 56 mussel, and 151 fish species, the Duck River is not just a natural wonder—it's woven into the fabric of our daily lives. Yet, as water withdrawals increase to meet the needs of expanding communities and industries, the delicate balance of this ecosystem is at risk. With permits for increased water withdrawals looming, we must unite to ensure the Duck River remains a thriving habitat for generations to come.🌍
