"Conservation" is a really broad term... Here's what conservation means to our co-founder, Anna Wentsch: 🌱 The environmental factor: protecting existing habitat, improving it and ultimately connecting it so our native species can thrive in a healthy home. 🧍 The people factor: taking positive action, building connections and raising awareness. It doesn't need to be complex, and you don't need to be a big name out in the bush to get involved. For example, it could be as simple as picking up rubbish on your local beach so that the trash doesn't kill our seabirds. So, what does conservation mean to you?

🌱 Planning Conservation with the Community in Mind🤝 Conservation isn't just about protecting nature—it's about people too. When we engage communities in conservation planning, we: 1️⃣ Ensure sustainability by addressing both environmental and social needs. 2️⃣ Empower local communities to take ownership of their natural resources. 3️⃣ Create long-term solutions that benefit both ecosystems and livelihoods. In this photo, Derick Wanjala and Victor Ndombi from Save the Elephants were engaging with villagers in Kajire, incorporating local knowledge as they planned for a human-elephant coexistence project there. By working directly with communities, we can foster sustainable solutions that benefit both wildlife and people. 🌍 When nature thrives, so do communities. Let’s continue working together for a future where people and nature coexist in harmony. 🌿 #Conservation #CommunityEngagement #SustainableDevelopment #PeopleAndNature #ConservationPlanning #HumanWildlifeCoexistence

Today is International Day of the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. World Mangrove Day is annually observed for the following purposes: 1. to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as a unique, special, and vulnerable ecosystem, 2. to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation, and uses. Mangroves are at high risk of being destroyed due to human activities, and collective action is urgently needed to combat it. According to the Global Mangrove Alliance, an estimated 67% of mangroves have been lost or degraded, and an additional 1% is lost annually. Overall, mangroves are disappearing 3 to 5 times faster than global forest losses. Thus, it is important to protect or conserve the mangrove ecosystem. This year’s theme is - “raising awareness about mangroves and their importance as self-sustaining ecosystems.” #passionforenvironment #environment #environmentalprotection #environmentconservation

In the world of conservation, one truth is becoming increasingly clear: lasting environmental change is only possible when the people most affected by these efforts are placed at the center. This belief is not just a guiding principle for The SEA People—it’s the foundation upon which our entire mission and vision are built. In Raja Ampat, one of the last marine wildernesses on Earth, we see firsthand how local communities possess an incredible amount of natural world knowledge that should be incorporated into conservation efforts. These communities, often overlooked or under-represented in broader decision-and-policy-making, hold the key to driving greater, more meaningful environmental change. Through our Yaf Keru reef restoration program and other initiatives, we’re engaging local people as participants and leaders in the conservation process, ensuring that both the environment and their livelihoods are protected. Conservation by Indigenous People is Critical for Truly Responsible Sourcing. Join our webinar on July 2nd to hear why and how this can be achieved from our panel, including Mighty Earth Waitrose & Partners John Lewis Partnership, and the voice of Lesan River Forest, Conservation Action Network. Rainforest conservation and achieving climate and biodiversity goals are about people, and the undisputed best guardians of the rainforest are Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC). The Forest Conservation Fund connects the private sector to partner with local community-managed, high-impact grassroots conservation projects in threatened rainforests in sourcing landscapes. Responsible Sourcing has evolved. Buying from suppliers who are not deforesting now needs to be complemented by actively protecting standing rainforests in sourcing landscapes. Whether you are involved with sourcing forest-risk commodities including palm oil, cocoa, rubber, pulp and paper, timber, soy, coconut, and minerals, or simply want to learn more about rainforest conservation, please register today to participate.
