Half of 1Ls are going to find out they ranked in the bottom half of their class when rankings get posted in the coming weeks. It sounds obvious, but I bet many of them will be shocked and surprised to find themselves there. Here's a friendly reminder that your class ranking doesn't define you or your value. Plenty of currently successful lawyers and judges did not do well on that first ranking. Indeed, I can name at least one who never looked great in grades and is now quite successful. I am sure there are many others. The goal in law school isn't to prove you have value. It isn't necessarily to win at the rankings, although I acknowledge high rankings have value and can open doors. The goals are 1) to learn how to think like a lawyer, 2) to prepare to pass the bar, 3) to build relationships with your classmates and with those in the field, and 4) to set yourself up to get a job after school which is a good fit for you.
