Support Beauty in the Built Environment: make a tax deductible Donation to Street Level Australia (link below). Great time for organisations in this industry to support building better, and make a pledge to a registered Australian charity before the end of financial year. They’ve already made such a big impact and proved what they can do with a small amount of resources, including the running of the Sydney is Beautiful architectural competition (involving a site attracting interstate and international entries), and here in Perth the Urban Architecture Studio (challenging the next gen of architects to physically model a mid rise site in Claremont using traditional proportions and facades inspired by local precedent). Street Level’s guiding principles: 01 Beauty. We exist to advance beauty in the built environment. 02 Longevity. We advocate for buildings and developments that will last hundreds, if not thousands, of years. 03 Tradition. We believe that there is an abundance of wisdom, knowledge and technology that our culture and institutions must rediscover. 04 Localism. We believe that decision-making should take place at the most local level possible. https://lnkd.in/gPqe9DsF

These Sheds (and clearly not just Mens Sheds anymore!) are such a good example of how great ideas spread: organically from within communities and not top down. Help from funders and other outsiders is important but only useful when called upon rather than pushed upon. The key is to understand what are the key ingredients for communities to organise themselves and lean into that. This is what sits at the heart of #communityfoundations
🏡The Somerset Levels and Moors Shed (SLaMS) were awarded £4,920 of funding from the Hinkley Point C (HPC) Community Fund, to build recycling bin storage shelters for housing association tenants living in Bridgwater. ♻In total the Shedders built 41 recycling bin shelters to help the community feel prouder of their homes, encourage recycling, and help reduce littering. 💭Amelia Thompson, Senior Programmes Manager at SCF, said: “Organisations like SLaMs play an important role in our communities, offering connection, conversation, and creation. They encourage people to come together and support their local area and projects.” 👉Read the full story https://lnkd.in/eTP6KypS #Somerset #Bridgwater #SomersetNews #BridgwaterNews EDF (UK) Bridgwater Mercury Andrew Cockcroft Freya Rosengren (nee Lee) Justin Sargent OBE DL Sue Wheeler UK Men's Sheds Association UK Men's Sheds

This Earth Month, Stardust is excited to bring you some eco-friendly home tips ♻️🏡 . Have you heard of 'deconstruction'? 🔨✨ It's the eco-friendly alternative to demolition - instead of destroying valuable materials from your home (cabinets, countertops, wood, tile, etc) and dumping them in a landfill, Stardust's deconstruction team will carefully remove each piece so these materials can be reused for many more years. . If you're thinking of remodeling your home, we encourage all of our customers to look into deconstruction, for several reasons: 🌎 Stardust's deconstruction team charges nominal fee (demolition can cost thousands) ♻️ we carefully remove each piece, including cleaning up & moving all materials (demolition can leave dangerous debris behind) 💙 saves you time and money! 🌱 it keeps reusable materials out of the landfill 🎉 PLUS, if you deconstruct with Stardust during Earth Month 2024 (April 1 - 30), you will receive a coupon for 25% off your next purchase! . On our Carpenters Estate regeneration we’re sustainably reusing what would be otherwise waste timber on our Meanwhile projects. But we’ve more Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels than we can use – so if you’re working on a project grab some for free on the Excess Materials Exchange (EME) app. As the panels have been stored outside the condition varies, and you’ll need to do your own due diligence for their application. But re-use ensures the panels aren’t wasted, and will save the right project money. Ideal for city farms, community gardens and a host of other applications. You can choose what you want from those available, with more details around quantity and sizing, plus collection information, on the EME app, or get in touch directly with us. London Borough of Newham and Populo – supporting your circular building ambitions. Come and find out about where I live, an amazing example of how community-owned housing looks and works, at our open day on 25th May. Chapeltown Cohousing is an amazing blueprint of affordable, community-led housing that has the potential to solve so many problems of our housing crisis. It provides those who live here with: 💥 A community to combat loneliness. 💥 Multiple diverse voices, reducing social division. 💥 Affordable rent with no private profit. 💥 Healthy and sustainable houses. 💥 A super strong sense of place. As a model it has the potential to help with: 🌼 Brownfield land development. 🌼 Increasing the quality of housing. 🌼 Keeping the private rental market in check. 🌼 Connecting people to the land they live on. 🌼 Promoting stewardship (of our neighbourhood, city, planet). So come down if you are interested and feel free to share :) There will be lunch !
