Happy Juneteenth! Today, we join millions across the nation in commemorating Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. This day, also known as #FreedomDay or #EmancipationDay, is a celebration and reminder of resilience, liberation, and the enduring fight for justice and equality. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of all enslaved people, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. WHY JUNETEENTH MATTERS Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone; it is a call to action. It underscores the importance of acknowledging the past, understanding the systemic injustices that persist, and committing to the ongoing struggle for racial equity. For the construction industry, it is a time to reflect on our practices and policies to ensure they foster diversity, equity, and inclusion (#DEI). Our experiences and the people we meet continue to inform our thinking and strengthen our resolve in how we show up to serve everyone -- in respectful and supportive ways so we can continue to create positive outcomes that benefit all. Juneteenth holds a new level of awareness, understanding, and meaning for us. As we traveled earlier this year on our Discover America: Civil & Human Rights tour we personally took important steps to understand our collective history and how it better informs us in moving forward. We realized just how much we didn't know across many dimensions. We met incredible people who were part of the early days of the Civil Rights movement, people who participated in the youth marches, and others who are bringing new levels of awareness through education, dialogue and engagement. It is always so powerful to physically visit locations where key events took place. It was even more impactful hearing people's stories and first-hand experiences. These led to meaningful and heartfelt conversations, as well as new connections that will continue to inspire new thinking and positive actions going forward. #unitedstatescivilrightstrail #juneteenth #civilrights #humanrights #memphis #birmingham #montgomery #nashville #atlanta #selma #nationalcivilrightsmuseum #legacymuseum #selmatomontgomeryinterpretivecenter #nationalmemorialforpeaceandjustice #birminghamcivilrightsinstitute #nationalcenterforcivilandhumanrights #tuskeegee #whoweareproject

Celebrating Juneteenth Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history, commemorating June 19, 1865, the day when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free. This announcement came a full two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in Confederate territories. The delay in the enforcement of the Proclamation highlights the deep-seated resistance to ending slavery and the complexities involved in applying federal laws across a fractured nation. The first celebration of Juneteenth was one of both profound joy and cautious optimism. The newly freed African Americans of Galveston rejoiced in the streets, their celebrations a powerful act of communal catharsis. However, this newfound freedom was tempered by the uncertainty of how true emancipation would unfold in the years to come. Despite the challenges they faced, including segregation, economic disparity, and the long struggle for civil rights, Juneteenth has remained a symbol of resilience and hope. It is a day to reflect on the bitter history of slavery, to celebrate the strides toward equality, and to renew the commitment to fighting against systemic injustices. This holiday serves not only as a reminder of past pain but also as an inspiration to strive for a brighter, more inclusive future. Title: Scream for Justice: The Voice of the Oppressed It is crucial for every culture of Black and Brown heritage to disrupt, to interrupt, to voice, to pursue, and to engage—all through legal means—to assert their rights. When colonizing nations like New Zealand fail to listen, it is time to summon the voices of our ancestors. Scream. Scream. Scream until they hear us. Demand recognition of the rights of the people. Remind the colonizers that they are outsiders, planted on this land by force. Remind them that their presence is not essential. If they left tomorrow, we would reshape and rebuild the land in the image of our forefathers’ dreams and memories. Colonizers often look baffled, as if they cannot fathom or recall the rich histories of the people they oppressed. But our fathers and mothers—the true stewards of this land—deserve a voice. And so we scream, loudly and relentlessly, proclaiming our rights from the past into the present, as the rightful natives of this land. Scream until they cannot ignore us. Scream until justice prevails. All rights reserved, Dr. Bryan K. Hickman, 2024. #IndigenousRights #Decolonize #SocialJustice #BlackAndBrownVoices #NativeHeritage #FightForJustice #LandRights #Colonization #IndigenousResilience #CulturalRevival #HumanRights #EqualityNow #AncestralVoices #DecolonizingMinds #EndOppression #GlobalJustice #ReclaimTheLand #CommunityStrength #ResistanceThroughUnity #JusticeForAll
