What is the biggest mistake a first time real estate developer can make? Hiring an equally inexperienced architect & general contractor. When you are new you want an architect that’s designed similar projects many times & an experienced GC. Nothing riskier than everyone doing their first project together.

Our industry has plenty of people who are great at paperwork. But what makes us different are the real builders — the people who take the concept and make it happen. Those that tie the steel, set the formwork, and place the concrete. At Baker, we have a passion for building builders. Our company is anchored by a cadre of capable, driven builders, and we are committed to developing and supporting them. How are we doing that? By first recognizing that the current and future state of our industry is dependent on retaining and building builders. As a company and an industry, we must invest in their development. Take our field leaders, our superintendents — for us, these folks are invaluable. They are our construction managers, they stand on the job, they are in the middle of it all. Thank you to all the builders out there — we appreciate you and need your help in developing the future. At Baker, we want to be known as the producer of builders. We can provide a path forward and upward to smart, determined folks, whether they are coming to us right out of high school or with a college degree. We are passionate about finding people with smart, smart grit, and we walk the walk by investing in their development. Because 30 years from now, builders are the ones who will make us even better than we are today. True builders are a dying breed, and we can’t automate our way out of everything and still expect to get things built. And so, for the companies that not only survive, but thrive into the next generation, it will be because of builders. And at Baker, we’re proud to be a company of builders. #BuildingBuilders #BuildWithBaker #ConstructionCareers

After a decade in the construction industry, I have learnt that one of the biggest problems is finding high-quality individuals and businesses to carry out specific tasks. When hiring a builder, contractor or tradesmen there are a few categories you want complete clarity on. Time frame (the start date and end date). The quality of the work. The price. As well as the above, communication is key throughout this whole process. Unfortunately, achieving this is extremely hard, then compromises are made which results in bad workmanship, delayed projects, and complete miscommunication regarding the price, which then tends to go down the legal route with both the client and the builder out of pocket. I have carried out hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of construction work for both myself and clients, building up a vast network of highly skilled, reliable and professional contacts. The construction industry has a bad reputation when it comes to professionalism, experience and communication. It’s time for change.
