Is your consulting advice too narrow? I'm teaching The Exeter MBA group today on consulting report writing. One of the discussion points will be on Prof. John Heron's Six types of intervention. These detail the six different ways in which professionals can intervene in a helping relationship: - Prescriptive: This type of intervention involves giving advice, direction, or prescribing a course of action to another person. - Informative: Providing information, teaching, or imparting knowledge. Confronting: Challenging the behavior, attitudes, or beliefs of others in a way that is intended to bring about change. - Cathartic: Encouraging the expression of pent-up feelings and emotions to bring about emotional healing. - Catalytic: Helping others to explore, reflect upon, and understand their own thoughts, feelings, and actions. - Supportive: Offering validation, appreciation, and encouragement to build confidence and self-esteem. The interesting thing here is that 90% of reports I see focus heavily on the Authoritative, but that 90% of the blockers to change and implementation require Facilitative interventions as well. Is there an opportunity for your consultancy to (i) help clients achieve more (ii) gain additional "change management" fees (iii) create higher success rates by thinking how your advice & reports can be more facilitative? #managementconsulting #boutiques #professionalservicefirms

Since university, I dreamed of owning a consulting office and helping SMEs scale in Saudi Arabia, my country. But coming from an academic family, my journey became: Academia → Aramco (best organization for training) I call this my "Two A's" journey... Exactly as my family wanted me to be an A student. I started my journey at Aramco, got married, and pursued my first master’s degree at Purdue University (Typical academic path). When I returned, I wasn’t feeling satisfied. Something was missing. I got back to my dream of building an engineering consulting business. But due to regulations, I couldn’t. Pushing through, I opened my own business. And then everything went wrong. I lost everything I had borrowed – around 200,000 SAR. The weight of that failure was crushing. For the next 5 years, I was paying back a debt that seemed to grow heavier every day. The struggle was real, and the stress was overwhelming. It wasn’t just the financial loss, but the feeling of having failed myself and my family. I knew I had to rebuild. So I made a promise to myself: I would learn everything I could about business. All while: -Pursuing an MBA from KFUPM. -Being married to my supportive wife -Having 2 kids who I love. -And having a job. It wasn’t easy... But I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. But I must say: without the support of my family, I wouldn't have made it. Why I do business? To give back to family (just as they did). I want to be a role model for my kids. After my MBA, I realized my strengths are in: -Management -Analysis -Critical thinking I translated that into digital marketing. Now at 34, I bring the best from both worlds to help SMEs achieve their goals through my two brands: Optimet & Creeva.
