When the wire spokes pull the blocks inward, the wheel's traction increases, like how surface tension maintains the shape of a liquid droplet. Conversely, when the wire spokes loosen, the wheel becomes less rigid, reducing its stiffness. It’s set to transform mobility for wheelchairs, mobile robots, and personal mobility devices. During tests, it was discovered that this innovative wheel allowed wheelchairs to easily climb steps up to 18 cm high and outperformed regular wheels on four-wheeled vehicles, tackling obstacles 1.3 times their own radius.
