When it comes to self-esteem, we can be our own worst enemy. Our self-talk is the constant stream of thoughts we have about ourselves. Our mental health can greatly influence the direction of our self-talk to be either positive or negative, and in turn, that self-talk will influence our mental health.

Mental health is still considered a taboo topic, especially in the workplace. While we may talk about mental health, we often hesitate to talk about our own struggles. Why? Because it's likely that we'd be treated differently. But the truth is, mental health affects all of us. Chances are that each and every one of us has gone through or will go through a significant downturn in our mental health at some point in our lives. It's okay to feel like crap, to be angry, to be happy, and to feel depressed. Maybe we should focus less on talking about it and more on accepting it for what it is. To think and feel is very much a blessing and a curse at the same time. How about we work towards creating an environment where people feel safe and supported, not judged or stigmatized or even avoided because we're afraid to offend them. Remember, we're all a bit "cooky" in our own way, all day, every day. Cooky picture for attention.

Ideally speaking, any bad experience should gradually go away from our mind on their own, leaving the lessons learnt alone. The time taken for this healing may vary depending on the intensity of the bad experience. Suppose, if the bad experience keeps lingering in the mind or grows in size, better to take the help of a mental health professional. It is akin to physical wounds. If they heal on their own, well and good. If they don’t heal and gets infected or grows in size, we consult a physician. Most of the emotional wounds get healed through counselling sessions, therapies, etc., without resorting to any medications.

"Mental health" can feel daunting. SO many of use feel like we aren't doing enough to take care of ourselves - or others, which only leads to feeling more stressed. So, on this world mental health day, may you keep it small. Pick one small thing that you can do today, and most days. - Set yourself a reminder to stretch, drink water, or eat lunch! - Post a sticky note or make a phone pop up reminding you that YOU ARE ENOUGH - Or, make a point to check in with your co-workers this morning, just to say hey and see how they're doing. Mental health is a continuum. Small actions to help keep you and others well are just as important as supporting care for those who are struggling. Take good care of yourselves - and each other. (And, also, don't feel bad when you can't. Life is tough!)

Anxiety, which includes panic disorder, is the most common mental health condition, affecting nearly 30% of adults during their lifetime. For some, anxiety and panic attacks can be triggered by excessive stress or pressure brought on by everyday tasks or activities. The workplace and job demands can be quite stressful. Consequently, you may see someone experiencing or showing signs of a potential anxiety or panic attack in the workplace. The most important thing you can do to support a person who seems highly anxious is to remain calm, even if you are feeling uneasy. If at any point you feel overwhelmed by the situation, reach out to another person to provide help.
