Feel-good stories are my weakness. Here’s one that made me feel great. An employee resigns within less then a year of being with us. He felt the role was too complex, not for him and he was unable to give back. A week before his last day he revokes his resignation. Curious, I asked him “What changed?”. “We celebrated my first year anniversary last week.” , he said. (Pause) “My manager and team members called out all I had done during the year. And I realized, I can do this.” I loved when he said, “I am here to stay.” (still smiling ear to ear as I write this post) 3 things we did right - 1. We celebrated the employee in year 1 2. We celebrated the employee even during notice period 3. We celebrated efforts and not just results Celebrating a work anniversary calls for going beyond just handing out a certificate or trophy. Research shows that employees stay at organizations for 2–4 years more when their company has a strong service awards program that celebrates employee tenure in meaningful ways. My amazing network, Thank you for the many congrats on my "work anniversary" recently (my consulting company Corporate Talent Advisors). Truth be told, I have had Corporate Talent Advisors (CTA) now for 16 years but haven't made mountain of money. I initiated CTA when I was part of a RIF, and was doing well for many months. But the uneven income was difficult and I missed the comradery of belonging in an organization. I have kept CTA alive with some side gigs, but went back to work full time in the corporate world. I love HR! Always have, always will. No other part of the organization can impact so many, create change, have a front row seat to view the worst and best, and watch individuals grow and succeed. I think I was pretty good at my job - I was always very challenged, successful, appreciated, and well compensated. But I've also seen bad leadership, HR-blaming, resistance to change, and egos that permeate and damage every corner of an organization. Yes, CTA is 16 years old, and I am now going to focus on this "teenager." I am happily stepping out of the full time HR race, spending my energy connecting with organizations, (for profit and not for profit), company leaders, community leaders, employment attorneys, and HR professionals to make an impact, share my experience, and equip others to have an impact on themselves, their organizations, and this amazing profession - Human Resources. If you are in HR, kudos, keep up the good fight. Be the best you can be - just as with any profession, you must continue to grow your knowledge, expand your influence, understand the business, and connect with people every day. HR is an integral part of the success of an organization - if your organization doesn't see or value that - leave. If you don't feel that - change your profession. If you need to talk - call me.

I have hired numerous team members in my career.    But somehow I have always had a very good experience with immediate joiners.  (not ones who don't serve their notice period kinds)  Rather people who are on a break due to some reason.  It could be maternity leave, sabbatical, family need or just plain quit-in-a-huff types.    They always seem to have a fire that outshines others.  Like they want to prove a point.  A hunger for achieving something.    The organization gains by way of an employee joining immediately.  The employee is grateful for a quick break.  Win-win for both sides.

Tale of a Company: Admired by most of their Ex-Employees including me. I've more than 15 years of experience in the digital marketing sector. Under my tenure, I've been part of many organizations. Each of these organizations has its pros and cons. One of those was AdGlobal360 (aka AGL), now known as AGL - Hakuhodo. Current employees' shortsightedness due to their own reasons, often ignore the ease provided to them by their employer; however, ex-employees know exactly what they have left behind. What makes AGL so special for me? 1. My department head Manish Sharma (before I rose to that role) was the best reporting manager I ever had not because of subject matter expertise but because of his leadership attributes. 2. My colleagues such as Sushant Vashisht, Karan Narang, Vinay Chandervanshi, Virender Singh, Balwinder S. Arora, Sagar Gupta, Abhinav Nayyar, Sahil Jeet Singh, Partha B were some of the best work partners one can hope for. 3. My CEO Mr. Rakesh Yadav despite being a highly intelligent and well-educated man was very tolerant even though he could see through all the bul****t. 4. My HR Stuti Juneja was one of the best if not the best HR I've ever worked with. She was a great factor in creating an amazing work culture where we were not tied to chairs. I've worked in, parking, cafeteria, garden, waiting zone, conference rooms, restaurants, and from all the possible places with no restrictions as long as work is happening. We also had a "Work hard, Party harder" culture, another reason to love the place. 5. My Growth due to opportunities I received to rise and shine which was supported and appreciated but not restricted. The principle was to elevate the one who is jumping high not to hold them back as it may be scary. Falling at AGL was never considered bad but looked at as preparation for flying. Other than all this, during my tenure at AGL, a lot of firsts entered my life. My first Indian brand, first car, marriage, my first baby girl, and a lot more. Many of these things are felt by most of the ex-employees and that's probably the reason they feel compelled to go back. Often in our lives, we do not appreciate the good things that happen to us. This is my way of formally thanking them for all of that. Gratitude to AGL and all those who made my journey memorable. P.S.
