ITS #GRADUATION TIME The ambition of the #AFYEL program is to train and empower young African recent graduates and final years of Electrical, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, Physics and solar energy, and Software Engineering with a proper understanding of renewable energy technologies, and opportunities for career advancement in the value chain in #Energy. The goal is to churn out a competent workforce for the #renewableenergy industry and build #Entrepreneurs who will advance access to #cleanenergy to 600 Million in Africa without Access and retain young African talent in a crucial sector like renewable energy, which is of paramount importance to unlock Africa’s #sustainable future. It's now time to our third cohort to graduate and change the world on the matters of #clean energy. #SWIPE When I had the idea to create the Africa Fellowship for Young Energy Leaders (AFYEL) in 2021 it seemed like a Herculean unachievable task to attempt alone without funding. Today, with the help of an amazing team, it’s the 3rd year and we are #graduating cohort 3 making a total of 210 young engineers, PhD students, Lectures and entrepreneurs from 35 countries who has received expert education and practical experience on #Hydropower, #SolarPower, #Onshorewind and #Bioenergy. WE want to work with you. Mr. Alin Dinita, Rector of Universitatea Petrol-Gaze din Ploiești, is featured on the cover of the July/August 2024 edition of Energy Industry Review Magazine! In an in-depth interview spanning over 10 pages, Mr. Diniță explores the 75-year tradition of our university, the significance of innovation and advanced technology in academia, and highlights important developing programs such as the “Mehedinteanu Petroleum Academic Consortium – PH01CAMP” and the development of a new university campus in Ploiești. He also discusses the future of the energy industry and efforts to attract students to our university. A Journey Across Disciplines: From Electrical Engineering to Renewable Energy and Now Material Science My career in engineering has been an evolving journey marked by curiosity, dedication, and a desire to solve meaningful societal problems. Starting in Electrical Engineering, my early understanding of the field was shaped by a perception of engineering as a discipline filled with distinct, unrelated specialisations. However, as I delved deeper, I discovered that these fields are far more interconnected than they first appeared. This realisation has been instrumental in shaping my path from Electrical Engineering to Renewable Energy Engineering, and now ultimately steering me toward Material Science and Engineering. Today, my focus is on the synthesis of materials for energy storage. Via the next Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK round I may pursue further studies in this field at Imperial College London. My experience has been enriched by years in the copper mining industry, understanding processes involved in mining copper ore, extracting and refining of the element copper and finally creating a copper cathodes. Along this journey, I have had the pleasure of working alongside brilliant individuals whose insights and mentorship have positively shaped my career. Looking back, it’s remarkable how much one can learn about a complex field in a relatively short time, especially when guided by the right questions. As a testament to how much I have developed, I have directed my expertise toward a practical objective: to contribute to Zambia’s ambitious goal of producing three million tons of finished copper. Through Tegridy Gold my team and I have been fortunate to see many of our efforts towards contributing to objective succeed. Of course, our work isn’t without its challenges—technical and financial hurdles that have been equally punishing and rewarding. What we hope to achieve besides earning revenue for #Zambia is to start a ripple that will inspire the future generation of Zambians to make this country great. I am thrilled to announce that my first PhD project, part of the #FLEETConsortiumKSA, has been published in Communications Engineering, a Nature Portfolio journal: "Solutions for Decarbonizing Urban Bus Transport: A Life Cycle Case Study in Saudi Arabia." In this study, we conducted a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) comparing hydrogen fuel cell buses, electric buses, and conventional internal combustion engine buses. Our LCA model, built on existing frameworks, filled data gaps in the field of fuel cell buses and in the Saudi region. It examined vehicle and fuel production, including grey hydrogen, blue hydrogen, natural gas, and petroleum, and included technical sensitivity analysis. Key findings indicate that in high-carbon grid environments, blue hydrogen fuel cell buses may offer more effective short-term decarbonization than electric vehicles, which are typically considered the lowest carbon option. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can achieve significant emission reductions in the short to medium term, while the decarbonization of electric vehicles hinges on the development of renewable energy infrastructure. In regions with limited renewable resources, what will be the future pathways for decarbonization? Once decarbonization is achieved, new environmental indicators will emerge as challenges.
