Nusantara, the future capital of Indonesia, was inaugurated on 17 August 2024 as part of Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day celebration. However, with only 15% of the city complete, its underwhelming development has strained the alliance between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his successor, Prabowo Subianto. We look at how this could drive tensions for the next government in the coming years. Read more: https://ow.ly/MYej50T0Qgx

Can Nusantara Meet its 2024 KPIs? I’m pleased to share my recent interview on Metro TV, where I discussed the potential of adopting a twin city (or sister city) concept for IKN, Indonesia's new capital. This concept, initially proposed by the Indonesian planning school association, could act as a transitional strategy, supporting Nusantara as it prepares for its full role as the capital city. In this approach, IKN and Jakarta could share governmental administrative functions, with one serving as the de jure capital and the other as the de facto capital. This twin city model can serve as a temporary solution, helping to bridge the administrative transition period as we await the signing of the Presidential Decree (Kepres) on IKN. However, despite such mitigation efforts, it is crucial that the government remains committed to developing Nusantara and meeting the planned KPIs while also addressing Jakarta’s existing challenges. Regardless of whether this concept is implemented, the current government should provide a clear timeline for the transition to Nusantara as the capital city as planned. Significant resources have already been invested in Nusantara’s development, and recent progress was showcased during the last Independence Day celebration. #nusantara #ikn #capitalcity https://lnkd.in/eE-KXv5k

https://lnkd.in/gATGF3Z4 On November 24th, Indonesia will hold simultaneous local elections across 507 cities and regencies, as well as in 37 provinces. Approximately 205 million people are expected to participate in these elections, where they will vote for their local leaders, including provincial governors, city mayors, and regency regents. Five cities and regencies will be holding the event in the Bandung basin area. Nine million voters will cast their ballots to choose leaders for the following positions: the Mayor of Bandung City, the Mayor of Cimahi, the Regent of Bandung Regency, the Regent of West Bandung Regency, and the Regent of Sumedang Regency. Greater Bandung, home to 9 million people, has experienced unplanned growth. This has resulted in insufficient transportation infrastructure, causing severe traffic congestion during peak hours. The city also generates 8000 tons of waste daily, necessitating an integrated waste management system. Additionally, various social issues have arisen from these challenges. To address Greater Bandung's challenges, a unified approach is required that involves collaboration among the five mayors and regents. No single city or regency can solve these problems alone. The leaders of Greater Bandung must act as a collective body, rather than focusing solely on their individual jurisdictions. Essentially, they must think and act as a unified whole.

Indonesia is a truly remarkable nation, celebrated for its vibrant diversity in all aspects - from its people to its rich culture and beliefs. And the best part? Despite these differences, the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika shines as a powerful unifying force. This beautiful phrase, meaning Unity in Diversity, encapsulates the idea that despite our individual identities, we are one strong and united nation. It's an ancient sentiment, taken from a 14th-century Javanese poem, that not only promotes tolerance but also encourages the celebration of diversity. By advocating mutual respect and understanding among different groups within Indonesia, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika has become a guiding principle for our society. This motto holds great significance in promoting national unity and preserving our precious cultural heritage. Its powerful message of inclusivity has helped shape Indonesia into an open and welcoming country for all. So let us continue to embrace our diversity with pride, as it is what makes us truly unique and harmonious as a nation.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by SeaToday MCR where I shared some perspectives on Prabowo's presidency. On 20 October 2024, Indonesia witnessed a significant political shift with the election of Prabowo Subianto as its new president, with major implications for its foreign policy. However, how will foreign policy actually change under Prabowo? Unlike Joko Widodo, who primarily focused on domestic economic development, Prabowo may adopt a more active and decisive approach, particularly concerning issues like the South China Sea dispute, strengthening Indonesia’s defenses in the region. He may push for regional economic integration, aiming to solidify Indonesia’s leadership role within ASEAN (even though on this point we should be very attentive to how ASEAN will evolve in Prabowo's perspective). Another point is his tendency to bolster ties with Beijing, but at the same time, he could maintain a policy of “active neutrality” to balance relations with Washington. #Indonesia #Prabowo #PathForward #Politics Prabowo Subianto: Guiding Indonesia’s Path Forward Part 1/3: https://lnkd.in/dNtaSxVM Part 2/3: https://lnkd.in/d8qjpBjE Part 3/3: https://lnkd.in/ddGSpfFu Fachrian Bachri

#ICYMI Senior Fellow Dr Alexander Raymond Arifianto and Research Fellow Dr Adhi Priamarizki tell us more about their recent policy report "Jokowi’s Legacies and the Incoming Prabowo Administration: Change or Continuity?" This policy report aims to do two things: make sense of Jokowi’s ten years in office and its possible legacies for Indonesia, and develop several scenarios for how the Prabowo-Jokowi relationship is likely to evolve once Prabowo assumes office and how Indonesia will move forward under his administration. The Trans-Sumatra Toll Road currently spans 884.5 km, connecting diverse regions from Lampung to Aceh through 24 different segments, totaling 2,704 km. This development is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth across Sumatra Island, with projected outputs reaching up to 756 trillion Rupiah, based on a study by PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero). As of the end of 2023, traffic on the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road had increased 19% compared to the previous year, with daily crossings now exceeding 59,000 vehicles, highlighting its crucial role in the region's economic development. INA's investments in the Medan-Binjai and Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar sections, in collaboration with PT Hutama Karya (Persero), aim to facilitate both domestic and international investors' engagement in Indonesia's expansive infrastructure projects. We are committed to supporting projects that not only deliver financial returns but also contribute significantly to the nation's progress and connectivity. #TransSumatraTollRoad #InfrastructureInvestment #INA #Indonesia
