The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) will be among those represented during the Energy Exchange set for March 26-28 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The event, hosted by the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program, works to ensure the federal energy and water community is better connected to deploy technical, operational and institutional practices and solutions to achieve net-zero emissions in federal operations. Energy Exchange is the largest training event and tradeshow for the federal energy and water management community. ERDC’s Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) will have a booth in the event’s exhibit hall – booth 605 – and team members will be on hand to share information about CERL’s innovative research. Exciting News in Clean Energy & Defense Here in Texas! Sage Geosystems has partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense's (DoD) Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) for a groundbreaking initiative at Naval Air Station (NAS) Corpus Christi, Texas. This collaboration will explore geothermal baseload power to provide clean, resilient, 24/7 energy to the base. The project will assess the potential of geothermal and hybrid energy solutions to create a microgrid, reducing dependency on the utility grid during outages or emergencies. As CEO Cindy Taff of Sage Geosystems said, this initiative is about more than just energy independence, it's about strengthening the operational capabilities of U.S. military bases in a world increasingly reliant on digital and electric infrastructure. Sage is also working on projects at Fort Bliss and Ellington Field, as well as building a 3 MW EarthStore geothermal energy storage facility in Christine, Texas, and partnering with Meta Platforms to develop up to 150 MW of geothermal power east of the Rockies. https://lnkd.in/gMvUfdY9 #GeothermalEnergy #CleanEnergy #EnergyStorage #ResilientEnergy #DefenseInnovation #Sustainability #SageGeosystems #NASCorpusChristi #ESTCP

As #HurricaneHelene rapidly intensifies and continues to head our way down here in Florida, I think I can speak for most when I say that WE COULD REALLY USE THE PROJECT PELE MMR right about now. It is perfect [and unfortunate] scenarios like these that make COMPLETE SENSE for FEMA to sign an MOU for one of these (or similar), sooner rather than later! The power outages WILL BE WIDE-SPREAD throughout the state. Some may even last for weeks at a time... Byron Donalds BWX Technologies, Inc. BREAKING GROUND: United States Department of Defense breaks ground on its Project Pele microreactor project at Idaho National Laboratory. DoD is planning to design, build, and demonstrate a transportable high-temperature gas reactor that will operate at the lab for a minimum of three years. The reactor will be manufactured by BWX Technologies, Inc. and connected to INL’s microgrid producing 1-to-5 megawatts of electrical power. The demonstration is being led by DoD’s Strategic Capabilities Office and could be one of the first advanced reactors to operate the U.S. as early as 2026. BWXT will also leverage its experience from the project to advance its civil-focused BANR microreactor, which is being supported through our Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program. Did you ever think you'd see a #nuclear reactor on wheels? The United States Department of Defense is working on the food truck of nuclear energy: a high-temperature gas #microreactor that can be transported to local US military bases to deliver snack-sized (1-5MW) servings of clean energy. Through Project Pele, the first prototype microreactor will be manufactured by BWX Technologies, Inc. and driven by truck to the Idaho National Laboratory for testing in 2026. This is a trailblazing initiative not just due to the advanced reactor technology, but also the #innovative use cases it opens up. BWXT will use the experience from Project Pele to advance a system of modular, factory-fabricated 50MW reactors that can be transported via rail, ship or truck to all sorts of end users: remote communities, critical infrastructure, natural disaster sites, and beyond.

IPF Spotlight 🔦: Another great workshop at 2024 IPF! Big Power, Minimal Impact: As offshore wind continues to grow along U.S. coastlines, the Department of Defense (DOD) is seeking to understand and minimize the industry’s potential impact on our nation’s defensive strategies. Join this panel of offshore wind experts and a former Naval leader for a conversation about areas of synergy between DOD and the industry, and how collaborative efforts can ultimately support the country’s global threat response posture. Speakers will review existing communications and approval protocols, such as the Clearinghouse Review Process with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), and active concerns. Ongoing research related to offshore wind turbine field location, geometry, operational modes and logistics, and effects on current development will also be explored, and attendees will leave with an understanding of the DOD’s U.S. threat monitoring landscape.
