Community solar programs have emerged as a promising alternative for those who wish to participate in the renewable energy movement but cannot install solar panels on their properties. Many individuals and businesses find themselves locked out of the traditional solar market, whether due to financial constraints, unsuitable rooftops, or rental agreements. Community Solar offers a solution by allowing participants to subscribe to or invest in a shared solar energy project, usually located offsite, and receive credit on their electricity bills for the energy generated. This model is gaining traction across the United States, driven by consumer demand and supportive policy frameworks. However, like any emerging industry, community solar faces its own set of benefits and challenges that impact local communities and the broader power industry. Last week, a new peak renewable generation record of 73.87% was reported in the National Electricity Market (NEM). Of that, 43.7% was generated from rooftop solar. Reflecting these results, over the past 7 years our customers in regional, rural, and remote NSW have nearly doubled their uptake of rooftop solar. Moving from 16.92% in 2017-18 to 32.64% in 2023-24. As more customers take the opportunity to generate green energy, they increase the potential to export excess solar power to the NEM when the sun is shining. Building the network of the future will empower communities to actively participate in the energy transition, fostering economic growth. Oxford PV announces world-first commercial sale of next-generation perovskite tandem solar panels set to transform the energy industry and accelerate progress towards clean energy goals. Oxford PV, a pioneer in advanced solar solutions, has commenced the commercialization of their groundbreaking tandem solar technology with the inaugural shipment to a customer in the United States. This is the first commercial deployment of a perovskite tandem solar panel globally. Oxford PV has been developing this technology since 2014, recently achieving a module efficiency of 26.9%. The new Oxford PV panels have a module efficiency of 24.5%, outperforming traditional silicon technology. They use perovskite-on-silicon cells made at Oxford PV’s pilot line in Brandenburg, Germany. Founded in 2010 by Henry Snaith and Kevin Arthur as a spin-off from the University of Oxford, Oxford PV emerged from pioneering research on affordable, high-efficiency solar cells. David Ward, CEO of Oxford PV said, “The commercialization of this technology is a breakthrough for the energy industry. High-efficiency technologies are the future of the solar industry, and that future is starting now.” “Solar innovation will allow us to faster electrify and decarbonise our transportation, homes, and industries. With more electricity generation from the same area, perovskite technology is now helping utilities speed up this transition by offering more energy at a lower cost.” John Bromley, Managing Director of Climate & Clean Energy Investments at Legal & General, has been a longstanding partner of Oxford PV. He added, “At an early stage, we identified the huge potential of perovskites in high-efficiency solar power generation and we have supported Oxford PV to become a global leader, not only through multiple record-breaking efficiency achievements in the laboratory, but also on their path to commercialisation of the technology. Companies with high growth potential like Oxford PV are delivering new technologies, solutions and infrastructures that will play a crucial role in the climate transition.” #energytheory #tandemsolartechnology #sustainability #OxfordPV
