When I know what I need and want, I’ll also understand the things I can’t do for myself. When I lean on the collective, knowing what I am asking those around me to help me with, I also understand what I can offer back to the collective. Liberatory self-care is about understanding what I need and then understanding how to get what I need while offering others what they need. Ultimately, what we all need is to get free. Does your nonprofit seek a good deal of its financial support by offering up to its donors and prospects the most pathetic and tragic examples of needs being served by the organization? Even going as far as to publish and broadcast photos and videos of its saddest cases? Early in my career we called this "CHARITY PORN," and for good reason. Because of its very negative and exploitive approach, charity porn was rather rare. Today, however, it is the preferred way for several larger nonprofits to motivate it's donors to give, and to attract new donors. I am a believer that the average donor is not only caring, but smart. You as a nonprofit leader may be able to move someone to making a first gift by using charity porn... But, you won't be able to retain them using these tactics.
