We used July’s Startline Used Car Tracker to ask dealers what they thought were the reasons behind the collapse of Cazoo. The top answer – at 50% - was that potential for online-only motor retail remains limited. It was followed by 37% who said investors overestimated efficiencies that could be accessed through technology, and 35% that Cazoo failed to recognise that existing dealers were already good at selling online. Perhaps the most interesting response is the 23% who say the arrival of Cazoo caused others in the market to improve their online proposition. While the business may ultimately have been a failure, it has arguably been good for the sector. "Used car dealer Cazoo poised to enter administration" A recent headline highlighted the impending administration of Cazoo. Cazoo's business model, which capitalized on the closure of physical dealerships, unfortunately, failed to evolve sufficiently to compete with the traditional car dealerships. Cazoo entering administration prompt a question : is there a market for online car purchases? I believe there is a market, however, it needs to be complemented by another revenue stream, it is not big enough yet. One innovative approach could have been leveraging Cazoo's existing car inventory for rental purposes, offering customers the convenience of having a rental car delivered directly to their doorstep. This could have served as an additional revenue stream, supplementing online sales. On the other hand, the personal touch of getting to know your mechanic and building a relationship is similar to visiting your favorite hairdresser.
