Research from Dr. Kymberle Sterling/Rutgers School of Public Health reveals that tobacco companies target Black communities with menthol cigarettes through predatory #marketing. Despite a federal pledge to ban #menthol by August 2023, the measure remains stalled by the Administration, prompting lawsuits from medical and civil rights groups. Sterling’s study shows that 81% of Black smokers use menthols, significantly higher than other groups. Many respondents are unaware of these harmful marketing tactics and lobbying efforts by tobacco companies. Why are the rules around advertising alcohol and tobacco so different? Tobacco and alcohol are lethal - both responsible for thousands of devastating diagnosis's and deaths every year. Yet, the rules governing their promotion couldn't be more different. Tobacco advertising has been heavily restricted for years, with bans on TV and radio adverts, as well as limitations on sponsorships and print media promotions. Alcohol advertising is still heard on the TV and the radio and seen in sponsorships and in print media. Imagine a world where people who are struggling with alcohol can seek help without being inundated by aggressive and targeted online marketing tactics. Unfortunately, the current landscape has turned every phone into a bottle shop and billboard, making it almost impossible for people trying to cut back to avoid alcohol ads. And new data from the AIHW paints a troubling picture - the proportion of people seeking help for alcohol as their principal drug of concern has climbed to its highest point in a decade. Over the past 20 years, the number of people who accessed treatment for alcohol as a common principal drug of concern has increased from 48,500 closed treatment episodes in 2003-04 to 92,417 closed treatment episodes in 2022-23. But together, we can advocate for an Australia that creates safer environments for everyone. Would you rather live in a world where you can sell D9 on the internet with the same tax structure as clothing. Or live in a world where consumer get taxed 20%-40% and have to buy strictly from certain shops with endless red tape. Why aren't we all getting behind lobbying for cannabis legalization through the farm bill instead of lobbying against each other because "of whats fair". I started with a Prop 64 Cannabis business in CA (3 actually) and have worn those wounds and continue too. I can put my ego aside and look at what's fairest for the consumer and for a businesses bottom line and it's for as free of a market as possible. I voted for Prop 64 and REGRET IT. The Government will not be capable of setting up a system that works for the consumers and the businesses. Instead it will continue to be grossly overtaxed and mismanaged. So what do we do? Maybe wipe our eyes and realize we have a structure existing that's close to legalization. Embrace it. Don't point fingers and cry but instead lend hands to each other to populate the space. The growth of the D9 drink category in MN should open people's eyes to the demand out there for quality crafted products. This doesn't mean we need to turn our backs on compliance. We need to work in strong compliance in the ecosystem so we can weed out the bad actors by conformity but not by cashflow and taxes. If your a cannabis brand and are not building your brand nationally in the "Hemp" space you are crazy. We were one of the first cannabis brand s to enter the hemp space and it's the reason I am still here typing to you today. So I ask, is there a world that you see more feasible with a better outcome than working from the current framework we have? I fail to see it. I fail to believe re-scheduling will do anything to fundamentally change the problem at hand. And I only see the destruction of the "unfair" hemp loophole to serve to continue to prop up economically senseless statewide models which all just work to support the black market. Open to be proven otherwise
