The new agrospecial on biodiversity is out! Included in the special is an article about China's biodiversity efforts: https://lnkd.in/giRZTaaf
Agrospecial Biodiversity Alert! Leading up to the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Colombia, we're happy to announce the launch of the 13th edition of the English Agrospecial e-magazine ‘Peace with nature: global biodiversity commitment’ published by the Netherlands Agricultural Network (LAN). 🌳 Biodiversity is not just about the variety of life on earth; it is the bedrock of a resilient ecosystem. Healthy ecosystems, sustained by rich biodiversity, are essential for not only sustainable agricultural productivity but also clean water, living soils, food sources, and breathable air. This requires a holistic approach that integrates biodiversity into agriculture, water and soil management. 🔎 LAN is actively involved in initiatives that foster the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity. From supporting sustainable initiatives to facilitating innovation and knowledge exchange between countries, agricultural counsellors and their teams are at the forefront of driving positive change. We invite all stakeholders - policymakers, businesses, knowledge institutions, NGO’s and societal organisations to engage with the issues addressed in this Agrospecial. We hope this edition inspires collaboration and fosters a collective commitment to creating a sustainable and biodiverse future, and by mainstreaming this important domain. Tirlán, in conjunction with Teagasc recently invested in developing a new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model, marking a milestone with Ireland’s first carbon footprint analysis of commercially grown Irish grain - from seed to farm gate. The finding reveal that the carbon footprint of Tirlán’s Irish oats is very low compared to oats produced in other regions in Europe and North America. Contact us to find out more about the sustainability and carbon footprint of Tirlán’s Irish oats. https://lnkd.in/e53_CE8R #Sustainability #Agriculture #CarbonFootprint #LifeCycleAssessment #Tirlán #IrishOats #ClimateAction"

Last Saturday marked #InternationalZeroWasteDay 🌍 (30 March), prompting us to reflect on our planet's health as we returned from the Easter break. We must address unsustainable production and consumption practices in food production, especially now as we strive for a more sustainable future ♻️ Let's emphasize the importance of improving waste management and resource use efficiency, paving the way for a more sustainable future. Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (#RAS) offer a promising pathway towards a circular model of seafood production. Despite the challenges ahead, these systems hold the potential for near-zero waste production. In the TETRAS project, we're tackling this challenge head-on: 🌊 Pilot 1 focuses on testing top-notch technologies to treat discharged water from RAS facilities, converting it into technical water for other industries, thus boosting water efficiency and promoting circularity in land-based aquaculture. 🦐 Pilot 2 delves into the symbiotic relationship between geothermal resources and RAS, aiming to harness geothermal energy for heating and mineralizing marine-brackish RAS, ultimately reducing operating costs and enhancing resource use efficiency. 💧 Pilot 3 explores optimal resource utilization (water, energy) at the Estonian Industrial Symbiosis Agropark (EISAP), designing a commercial RAS farm integrated with greenhouses, industries, and offices to optimize water use and management. 🐟 Pilot 4 integrates a small-scale RAS with plant cultivation to elevate awareness and understanding of the nutrient cycle in aquaculture, fostering knowledge exchange and environmental stewardship. One process’ waste or residual is another process’s resource Learn more about our project here: https://lnkd.in/eCM6GEF5 Read more about the International Day of Zero Waste here: https://lnkd.in/gi8tuenZ #LandAquaculture #SmartWaterSolutions #MadewithInterreg #SustainableAquaculture #IndustrialSymbiosis Klaipeda Science and Technology Park Klaipeda University Per Dolmer Business Lolland-Falster SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth EEIG IVIA - Ida-Viru Investment Agency Akola Group Guldborgsund Kommune University of Gdansk Hochschule Wismar

STEN Team with VLIR-ITP: Empowering Sustainable Aquaculture and Agri-food Production through Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment 💻♻️🌱 I had the privilege of immersing myself in the "VLIR-ITP: Sustainability and SDG’s: How to measure and move forward Global Goal 12" course, an enlightening three-month journey into the realm of sustainable aquaculture and agri-food production. 💻 The comprehensive online sessions led by Professor Dr. Jo Dewulf, Dr. Pieter Nachtergaele, Dr. Trang Nhu, Dr. Sophie Huysveld, Dr. Erasmo CADENA, Dr. Sue Ellen Taelman, MSc. Kobe Vulsteke, Dr. Laura Vittoria De Luca, MSc. Naomi Muin, and MSc. María Ignacia Rodríguez Escobar provided a solid foundation in sustainability, SDGs, sustainable technologies, ecosystem services, circular economy, and life cycle thinking. ♻️ The highlight of this course was the hands-on "Clean Technology Assessment Methods" module, where I delved into Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Material Flow Analysis techniques using OpenLCA. A special thanks to Dr. Trang Nhu, Dr. Erasmo Cadena, and Dr. Kobe Vulsteke for their unwavering dedication and patient explanations, which made these complex concepts accessible. 🫱🏽🫲🏽 This course has been a deeply enriching experience, solidifying my knowledge and passion for sustainable practices in aquaculture and agri-food production. Hence, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the entire STEN Team for their dedication and the invaluable knowledge shared throughout the course. This experience will undoubtedly contribute to my sustainable agri-food projects. #VLIRITP #Sustainability #SDGs #LifeCycleAssessment #CircularEconomy #SustainableAquaculture #AgriFoodProduction #SDGs #LCSA #LCA #CleanTechnology #Aquaculture #Agrifood #GreenChemistry #Bioeconomy
