There’s plenty of theories on where the suicide stigma started… religion… law… language… Perhaps, it started with how hard it is to comprehend suicide. Perhaps, it’s hard to believe that someone wants to die when everything you do is centred on ‘living’. Perhaps, it’s too heartbreaking to consider that our loved ones are in so much pain, that we are not enough for them to want to live. Perhaps, it’s easier to write this complexity off as sin or insanity. And perhaps, this complexity manifested itself in religion, law, and language, perpetuating the problem. If so, does the solution for removing stigma sit in our ability to empathise with those suffering? And if so, does the responsibility rest with the people who’ve suffered, to tell their stories? I think so but I don’t know. Hopefully we get closer to the solution on November 20!

November marks Mental Health Awareness for Men. As someone who has worked in the construction industry for a number of years and having first hand felt the effects of losing a colleague. It comes as no surprise that the industry has one of the highest stats for suicide. This really hits hard, which is why mental health has always been a subject that I couldn’t advocate more. So why is Men’s Health Awareness Month important? Four in five suicides are by men, with suicide the biggest cause of death for men under 35. [1] In 2022, men aged 40 to 54 had the highest suicide rates in the UK. [2] In 2017, 12.5% of men in the UK were experiencing some form of common mental health condition. [3] Nearly three-quarters of adults who go missing are men. [4] Men are nearly three times as likely as women to become dependent on alcohol and three times as likely to report frequent drug use. [5] I urge anyone struggling right now please reach out, you are not on your own. To everyone to just check on that family member, send that friend you haven’t spoken to in a while a text or even call, ask that colleague if everything’s okay if they don’t seem there usual selves. My door is always open, phone always on day or night, please do reach out. 💜
Today, 1 November, marks the start of Men’s Health Month which is designed to raise awareness of three key health issues, including mental health and suicide prevention. The aim of the month is to encourage men to start conversations about their health, and to seek support if they need it. This is at the heart of what we advocate for, and it is why we work collaboratively with organisations of any size to embed a proactive, prevention strategy which empowers them to create a supportive workplace culture which creates positive mental health in and through work. As part of our Men’s Health Month activities each week we will post a Time To Talk film, created in partnership with fischer UK – please look out for, watch and share them. As we step into November, a month focused on men’s health awareness, we’re reminded of the importance of mental well-being in our daily lives—and particularly in our field. Dentistry is among the professions with the highest rates of mental health challenges, including suicide. This stark reality calls us to action: we must not only highlight these issues in November but also build ongoing support, empathy, and openness into our lives and workplaces year-round. Let’s commit to looking out for one another. Small acts like checking in, offering a kind word, and showing genuine respect can make a significant difference. Slowing down to connect, sharing words of encouragement, and creating a safe space where we all feel valued and understood are crucial steps toward building a supportive community. Harmony, peace, and honesty aren’t just ideals—they’re necessities. Let’s foster an environment of support and kindness, where everyone feels encouraged to speak up and seek help when needed. Together, we can promote well-being, reduce stigma, and build a culture that values love, compassion, and mental health every day—not just this month. #MensHealth #MentalHealth #WellBeing #SupportEachOther

Today, on October 10th, we observe World Mental Health Day, an annual international day dedicated to promoting global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma. The primary goal is to raise awareness about mental health issues worldwide and to rally support for mental health initiatives. For 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) has selected the theme "Mental Health at Work." This theme highlights the critical importance of addressing mental health and well-being within the workplace, benefiting not only individuals but also organizations and communities as a whole. World Mental Health Day aims to make mental health a global priority, encouraging open discussions about mental well-being and promoting initiatives that support mental health care. Each year, a new theme is chosen to shed light on different aspects of mental health, raising awareness and emphasizing their significance. This day plays a vital role in reducing stigma, encouraging individuals to seek help, and fostering a more supportive and compassionate environment around mental health issues. #worldmentalhealthday #MentalHealthatWork #workplacewellbeing #mentalhealth

This November marks Men's Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to acknowledge the challenges men face when it comes to mental well-being and to break down the barriers that keep conversations around this topic in the shadows. At The Yorkshire Care Alliance, we understand the importance of creating environments where both mental and physical health are supported, especially in the health and social care. The stigma surrounding men’s mental health is a real concern, and for those working tirelessly to support others, it can be even harder to reach out for help themselves. Let’s take this month as a reminder: promoting a culture of openness, understanding, and empathy isn't just a nice-to-have—it’s essential for sustainable care practices. Those who care for others, whether personally or professionally, often find themselves so focused on the needs of others that they struggle to prioritise their own mental health and well-being. Sometimes, it takes someone else checking in to remind them to take a moment, pause, and reflect on how they are truly feeling. We’re committed to supporting the people behind the care, championing not only compliance and high standards but also the well-being of those who work to achieve them. Together, let’s ensure that checking in on mental health is just as routine as discussing regulations and care practices. #MensMentalHealth #MensMentalHealthMonth #BreakTheStigma #SupportMensMentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #MensWellbeing #SpeakUp #MentalHealthSupport #MentalHealthAwareness #TakeCareOfYourself #MensHealthMatters #TalkAboutIt #MentalWellness #MentalHealthForMen #SelfCareForMen #EndTheStigma #MenAndMentalHealth #MensMentalHealthSupport #MensMentalHealth2023 #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay
