🌎 From CBD COP16 in Cali to UNFCCC COP29 in Baku: Biodiversity Must Be Emphasized in Every Climate Dialogue 🟢 As we move from CBD COP16 in Cali to UNFCCC COP29 in Baku, it's essential that biodiversity stays in focus throughout climate discussions. Biodiversity loss and climate change are deeply interlinked—healthy ecosystems support climate resilience, and climate stability depends on biodiversity. But despite this, biodiversity has often been overlooked in climate negotiations. 🟢 At COP16, the world reaffirmed the critical role of biodiversity in combating climate change. Participants agreed on the need for a joint approach that integrates biodiversity with climate goals, emphasizing the importance of protecting ecosystems as a natural way to curb emissions and enhance resilience. 🟢 Heading into COP29, let’s bring biodiversity to the forefront of climate dialogues. By emphasizing biodiversity in every climate discussion, we strengthen our path toward a sustainable, resilient planet for all. 🌍 Cali’s message to Baku: biodiversity and climate action must be delivered in tandem- https://lnkd.in/gkpPCmzi #COP16 #COP29 #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #Sustainability

Though this kind of investment might be seen as off- putting for conservative investors, but they present an opportunity to achieve climate targets while offering emergent investment opportunities for both impact- and return -focused investors in primary and secondary agriculture, as they are always embedded with market system potentials for green businesses.
Reflecting on our journey at #COP16, we're honored to have led impactful conversations focused on halting deforestation, combatting land degradation, and protecting biodiversity through locally led, nature-based solutions. 🌱 At the heart of our discussions was a commitment to driving impactful conservation investments, which requires robust financial analysis and supporting local organizations in developing strong investment proposals. By adopting a #LandscapeApproach—uniting communities with public, private, and financial sectors to manage ecosystems sustainably—we can overcome financing barriers and enable stakeholders to co-create projects that benefit both nature and communities. 🧑🌾 As we look ahead to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (#COP29), one message is clear: climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation are interconnected crises that cannot be tackled in isolation. Many of the same government, civil society, and corporate leaders who attended COP16 will join us at the upcoming conferences, offering a unique and critical opportunity for a coordinated approach and more cooperation between the three COPs and their secretariats. These issues are part of a much larger, more complex puzzle. And if we hope to solve it, we need to work together, break down silos, and approach these problems in an integrated way. 2024 must be a moment for collaboration—are you with us? 🤝 Click on the link below to dive into our call for coordination—written by Duncan Williamson, Rainforest Alliance Senior Manager, Public Affairs & Advocacy! 👇 https://lnkd.in/gvQhdZSr #RainforestAlliance #Biodiversity #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #Sustainability #SustainableFinance

The #CountdownToCOP16 begins! With just a month left until the biodiversity COP, I'll be highlighting global stories that inspire my hope for a just transition for both people and nature and addressing the pressing challenges we face. Why? The convergence of three major COPs this year is a unique opportunity for collective action on nature, climate, and people. In Montreal in 2022, witnessing the Global Biodiversity Framework take shape was a pivotal experience and lesson in a more optimistic politics of the possible. Alongside Benj Sykes and Nadia Gullestrup Christensen, I represented Ørsted to advocate for high ambition for nature, demonstrate that integrated action for climate and nature is possible, and showcase our efforts through offshore wind. This year, global decision-makers will gather at three COPs, focusing on #Biodiversity, #Climate, and #Desertification. How can public and private sectors transcend geopolitical tensions to curb carbon emissions, halt biodiversity loss, and ensure a more inclusive economy? How do we finance action and alleviate undue debt burden for the countries that can best deliver on global goals? As Ibrahim Thiaw, Undersecretary-General of the United Nations, noted at #NYCW, having three COPs in three months is "a wonderful opportunity for countries or parties... to actually have a much more holistic view rather than having decisions that are specific to one convention that may actually harm another treaty." At Ørsted, we understand that addressing the twin crises of climate and nature requires integrated solutions. Minister Maria Muhamad’s theme for COP16, "Peace with Nature," has never been more relevant. Acting in harmony, finding policy coherence, and leveraging Nationally Determined Contributions and Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans are crucial steps towards that vision. See you in Cali (hopefully with fewer layers)! #COP16 #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #SustainableEnergy #UNBiodiversity #TNFD #NatureDisclosure https://lnkd.in/e5MGYSYT

2024 was a year for tremendous momentum for battling climate change. In just one year, three climate change conferences were held, a triple COP year according to World Economic Forum. COP28 focused on climate, COP16 on biodiversity, and COP16 on desertification, a clear message is emerging: an integrated approach to our planet’s future is crucial. Here’s what a triple-COP year drives home: 🌍 A deeper understanding of biodiversity, land, and climate synergies Each COP emphasizes how climate stability, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management are intertwined. Healthy ecosystems naturally mitigate climate impacts, while stabilizing climate conditions supports diverse ecosystems. Together, they strengthen our capacity to tackle environmental and societal challenges. 🌍 The importance of a holistic, coherent approach “You cannot just solve the issue of biodiversity or climate alone or land degradation, or you have to have a very coherent view,” said Ibrahim Thiaw, executive secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. “It is important to have a holistic view so that you do not destroy with the left hand what you are trying to build with the right.” 🌍 Awareness and momentum for under-discussed issues Having three COPs in one year can create momentum for critical conversations and amplify issues, especially in the private sector. Putting topics such as biodiversity and desertification on the radar of business leaders is particularly important, and is what can help lead to change. This triple-COP year is a powerful reminder that the future we envision—where climate stability and biodiversity thrive together—requires us all to act decisively and together. Here’s to making even more progress in 2025! https://lnkd.in/gDv_B97f #cop #climatechangeconferences #climatechange #biodiversity #climatecrisis #sustainablefinance #climatesolutions
