What's the missing puzzle piece for preparing for parenthood? Understanding how it changes your relationship. Appreciating how our traditional gender and societal norms will infiltrate the decisions you make. Understanding the long term impact of decisions you make now on your future career. I launched Parents that Work and self-published Beyond Baby Talk this year because I'm on a mission to help couples navigate the transition of early parenthood. To help have the conversations that will support our relationships, family and careers in the long term. To challenge and help breakdown our deeply embedded gendered norms in ways that will ✨Enable all dads to have the best relationships with their children, role model #parentingoutloud at work, and be great homemakers with their partners. ✨Help mother's let go of the weight of the mental load that comes with motherhood, feel fully supported in their careers and at home. ✨Role model to our children that there aren't 'blue jobs' and 'pink jobs'. Men aren't the breadwinners and women aren't the homemakers. It's a big topic and shift that will take time, community, cheerleaders and support. So I'm starting a new series of tips. Inside Equal Parenting will be shared on Instagram and my newsletter to offer advice and ideas for the ways in which you can share the load and the conversations to have. ❓ What would you love to see in this series? 🙏 Please invite your parenting community to get involved and be part of the conversation. A Pediatrician and a Parent's Perspective: How parenting helps in building a stronger society? Recent events, including the tragic, heart-breaking incident involving a female doctor, have highlighted the urgent need to reflect on how we can shape a better, safer society. As both a pediatrician and a mother, this tragedy has prompted me to consider the profound impact that effective parenting can have on creating a healthier and more respectful future. Modern parenting goes beyond fulfilling every need; it’s more about instilling values, providing structure, and fostering resilience. 1.Providing structure and firm guidance Children need clear boundaries and consistent guidance to thrive. Effective parenting combines affection with structure, helping children understand respect and responsibility while preparing them to handle life’s challenges with confidence. 2.Teaching respect and avoiding gender stereotypes Educating children about respect and equality from an early age is essential. By challenging gender stereotypes and promoting respect for all individuals, we lay the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable society. 3.Building resilience through managed disappointments Allowing children to face disappointments helps them build problem-solving skills and emotional strength, equipping them to navigate life’s difficulties effectively. 4.Creating a Safer and Stronger Society By focusing on modern parenting practices, we contribute to a generation that values respect, responsibility, and resilience. This approach not only shapes individual character but also fosters a safer and more supportive society for everyone. Together, we can work towards a better and more respectful society. #Parenting #ModernParenting #ChildDevelopment #Resilience #Respect #GenderEquality #PediatricAdvice #BuildingCommunity #StrongerSociety #safersoceity

Day 4 #pmhweek24 - Parenting with Disability For many people, becoming a parent provides a point of connection where one may previously have felt dismissed or unseen. However, it is not uncommon for a person with a disability to experience societal assumptions, judgements or lack of understanding, particularly within their perinatal journey. For parent’s whose disability is not visible, they may feel unaccounted for or misunderstood. Such experiences may mean one feels less inclined to connect or seek support during their perinatal experience. This week is an opportunity to reflect on how our community can support one another. With 1 in 5 people in Australia having a disability, we need to be conscious of individual needs and how one identifies with their disability. As expectant and new parents, we know how important it is to be connected to a village. If you notice a friend, loved one or member of a parenting group doesn’t attend gatherings or seems withdrawn or overwhelmed, it is possible they may be experiencing perinatal anxiety or depression. Some other ways our perinatal community can ensure accessible, inclusive and client-centred care: 💜 View intersectionality of experience – gender, sexuality, culture and religion of each expectant and new parent, alongside any disability 💜 Consideration of space (from medical rooms, birthing suites, breastfeeding and changing stations, waiting areas, mental health and parenting service). For example: physical accessibility, options for those with low sensory threshold 💜 Provide resources in a variety of formats – written, audio, pictures, videos, graphs 💜 Inclusion of any carers and the relationship with the expectant or new parent 💜 Specialised service delivery, where suitable 💜 Embed lived-experience feedback into all areas of service delivery Parents with disabilities, there are communities for you visit pmhweek.org.au #pmhweek2024 #mentalhealth #pareningwithdisability #earlyparenting
