🌍Net-zero by 2050: One plan. Two objectives. How green growth can build the Northern Powerhouse🌍 NPP has unveiled a new net-zero report that highlights the transformation potential of private investment in achieving net zero. The report builds on a Cambridge Econometrics analysis which shows that industrial decarbonisation and reducing emissions from real estate are the sectors offering the highest potential private investment leverage overall. The report suggests that for every £1 of public money invested, at least £4 can be generated from the private sector, demonstrating the substantial economic benefits of these initiatives. Strategic recommendations: 1) GB Energy to deliver the UK's first orders for a fleet of small modular reactors (SMRs). 2) Develop our offshore wind and tidal supply chain 3) Push ahead with carbon capture use and storage (CCUS) on the Mersey, Tees and Humber. 4) Retrofit domestic and commercial buildings with heat pumps 5) Electrify the railways and produce SAF for the aviation sector 🔊 Let's discuss 🔊 What role do you think the private sector plays in the North’s transition to net zero? I will admit before 2012 I had never heard of Carbon, Capture and Storage (CCS). Then I joined the ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES INSTITUTE LLP and was introduced to the need for net zero - which is a systems challenge - to have a systems solution. The modelling consistently showed the value of CCS to the most cost-effective solutions for meeting 2050 targets. A lot of debate has ensued since then and it is fair to say not everyone is convinced, but most modellers value its importance - now called Carbon, Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) to successfully delivering on a net zero transition. Following on from the closure of the last coal plant in the UK, this feels like the steps into a new future...It also shows these are very big infrastructure decisions which have to be made with a long-term commitment and a price tag to match. But the infrastructure and the decarbonisation of power generation have to be the first steps in a systems approach to decarbonisation. https://lnkd.in/ehb2x-cC

Why the free market will NOT deliver an alternate energy model. Governments are desperately trying to do so, Brett Christophers explains how green energy transition is so unattractive to private investment. And subsequently why we're getting such a slow uptake. Govts are essentially constraining the market in terms of pricing (think electricity) whilst simultaneously trying to drive investment into alternatives. What this creates in a free market, is that investment funds/banks, the people who lend money - debt leveraging basically - won't lend to a lot of these new "green" investments. Which explains to some extent why major energy companies prefer to continue with their current fossil fuel investment. Better return on investment. Companies can see that governments might talk about a transition, but their actions support the opposite. 🌍 A New Era for Clean Energy: £22bn Carbon Capture Investment! 🌍 The UK government has announced a £21.7bn investment over the next 25 years to support carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS) at the East Coast Cluster in Teesside and HyNet North West in Merseyside. These pioneering projects aim to decarbonise heavy industry and power generation, while supporting low-carbon hydrogen production. 🔹 Key Outcomes: 👥 4,000 new jobs (that’s £5.3M/job or £210k or two PMs worth of clothes for what ? See 👇 in comments ) with long-term support for 50,000 more. ✈️ 8.5 million tonnes of CO2 removed annually – equivalent to taking 4 million cars off the road. ⛽️ Decarbonising hard-to-electrify industries, such as heavy industry and major industrial processes. Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the importance of this investment speaking today : “We’re reigniting our industrial heartlands by investing in the industry of the future… Today’s announcement will give industry the certainty it needs – committing to 25 years of funding in this ground-breaking technology – to help deliver jobs, kickstart growth, and repair this country once and for all.” While supporters like Emma Pinchbeck, Chief Executive of Energy UK, emphasise that CCUS is crucial for decarbonising industries that cannot easily transition to clean electricity, critics argue the focus should shift to renewables and energy efficiency. Greenpeace UK pointed out that: “Carbon capture tech allows fossil fuel companies to continue polluting.
