Supporting Student-Athletes: A Guide for Parents, Mentors, and Coaches Venus Williams once said, "As a college athlete, you have to be excellent in both sports and academics. It’s a huge commitment, but it builds character and prepares you for whatever comes next in life." As student-athletes prepare to go back to school, it's crucial we’re there to support their journey. Are they balancing their roles as both student and athlete, or leaning more towards one? What path do they want to be on? Remember, you play a pivotal role in this journey. Here’s how you can provide the best support: 1. Encourage Balance: Help student-athletes find a healthy balance between academics and athletics. 2. Align Support with Goals: Ensure your guidance aligns with their academic and athletic aspirations. 3. Be a Mentor: Offer advice and share experiences to help them navigate challenges. 4. Celebrate Achievements: Recognize and celebrate their accomplishments, both big and small. 5. Provide Resources: Make sure they have access to the necessary resources for success in both areas. By offering balanced and aligned support, you can help student-athletes enjoy their journey and stay true to themselves. #studentathlete #mentorship #academicgoals #supportsystem #athletewellbeing #performanceoptimization #collegesports

Parents of high-school students and student-athletes, Lots of acronyms out there, and each of them surely mean something different! The NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA (Junior Colleges) are three separate college athletic organizations that together service about 650,000 student-athletes per year. The NAIA has one level. The NJCAA has three levels, just like the NCAA. Most people think that the three NCAA divisions, the NAIA, and NJCAA all exist in their own bucket: NCAA Division I being the “best”, with JUCO being the “worst”. While this may be true for some schools, there is a lot more congruency than you may believe. In actuality, all the levels are overlapped. Below is some information on each level / opportunity. Get your ego out of the way. There is a Fit for you and your child that is right. Remember that athletics should be treated as ONE ELEMENT in making your final decision on where to attend college. You should be realistic about your current skill level, your athletic goals, and your true desire to participate and compete. Check out the new blog post at the link below. It's important to look at what a student-athlete truly needs academically, as well as what they need in a sports program. Start early; there are tons of options to explore in DI, II, III, NAIA and JuCo. Keep in mind that since most of the scholarship money is in academic scholarships, the focus needs to stay in academics where a student-athlete is most likely to get scholarship money, regardless of division. Having an open-mind to all options, and steering clear of the “DI or bust” mentality will lead to a successful college athletics recruiting process. #athleticscholarships #collegesports #playsportsincollege #NCAA https://lnkd.in/gZHuK-T5

Day 9 improvement in college athletics #LinkedInSportsChallenge In my current role, I often find myself as the middleman between student-athletes and coaches. Student-athletes trust that when they come to my office to vent, I’ll hear them out. At the same time, I support coaches by keeping them informed if athletes are struggling academically. One area I’ve been considering for improvement is strengthening the academic support and buy-in from coaches. I understand this level of support may not be present at every school. However, I believe that if coaches don’t see the value in academic success or student-athlete development, it can be challenging to get players to fully commit. With the evolving landscape of sports, athletes today aren’t willing to put up with scare tactics or threats from coaches—they know they have options and can find opportunities at other schools. One solution is to ensure there’s clear communication and a mutual understanding of what academic and student-athlete support roles can achieve and how these efforts ultimately benefit the athlete. After all, we’re all on the same team, working toward the success of our student-athletes on and off the field. I’d love to hear from others in the comments: have you experienced something similar at your school? #ChatZDP #HBCU #GramFam #academicsuccess #studentathletedevelopment #personaldevelopment #studentathletes #collegecoaches #transferportal

Having been associated with athletics since the early 2000’s as a high school coach, then transitioning into collegiate athletics I have the upmost respect for athletes, in this case placing focus on college athletics. Your(athlete) time is precious as you have but a short period to develop and experience the realm of college athletics, being a student-athlete, experiencing that feeling on opening day on the pitch or court or pool, the thrill of victory, and learning from defeat. Whatever the venue that time between the dashes deserves the acclaim and respect of decision makers, leaders in higher education, etc. This is a topic of interest of mine for some time, and every time I have discussions such as these the following always come questions/themes to mind: 1. Are decisions being made that enhance the experience of student-athletes? 2. Are we creating a safe and judgement free environment for our student-athletes? 3. Do we have a strategic/feasibility plan for sustainability? How often is the plan revisited? Respect in the highest for those who are blessed with athleticism and abilities to become more than oneself, but as a piece of a larger whole. To represent yourself, your institution, and your family. You(student-athletes)deserve the best experience possible between your dashes! #RespectTheExperience
