🐟💔Over the weekend, a tragic event unfolded in Busia County, Kenya, where fish farmers discovered thousands of dead fish floating on Lake Victoria. Preliminary estimates indicate a staggering loss of up to 50,000 tonnes. The suspected cause of this incident is water pollution, which highlights a critical environmental issue that demands our attention. This crisis is a clear demonstration of the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, as emphasized by the #CDC's #OneHealthApproach that encourages collaboration among various stakeholders—including environmental scientists, public health officials, veterinarians, and local communities—to address the complex factors contributing to such ecological disasters. As the fishing community faces significant losses, it is essential that we unite to combat the underlying causes of water pollution in Lake Victoria. It is by promoting sustainable practices and effective environmental management that we can protect this vital ecosystem and support the livelihoods of those who depend on it. It is time to act collaboratively across all sectors to achieve better health outcomes for our environment and communities. 🌿💚 #OneHealth #BusiaCounty #LakeVictoria #WaterPollution #FishFarming #EnvironmentalSustainability #Collaboration #Biodiversity https://lnkd.in/dtKtv4Ym

Agrochemicals have helped to increase food production over the last century, supporting food security for a growing population. For this to be achieved in a sustainable way - the short, medium and long-term impacts of agrochemicals in terrestrial, avian and aquatic ecosystems and also their effects on humans have to be investigated and reduced to a minimum. The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved the import and release of four insects to control the spread of purple loosestrife, an invasive wetland weed. Horizons Regional Council applied to introduce the four insects in the Manawatū-Whanganui region as biocontrol agents to target different parts of the purple loosestrife plant, Lythrum salicaria. “These insects have been used as biocontrol agents for more than 30 years in the USA and Canada, where they reduced purple loosestrife infestations by up to 90 percent,” says Dr Chris Hill, General Manager, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms. “We hope the introduction of these insects will help slow the spread of this highly aggressive weed and protect our precious wetland ecosystems.” The insects are: ➡ two beetles that eat the plant’s leaves Neogalerucella calmariensis (commonly known as the black-margined loosestrife beetle) and Neogalerucella pusilla (commonly known as the golden loosestrife beetle), ➡ a root-feeding weevil, Hylobius transversovittatus (commonly known as the loosestrife root weevil), ➡ a weevil that eats purple loosestrife flowers, Nanophyes marmoratus (commonly known as the loosestrife flower weevil). 🌿💧 Wetlands are incredible habitats, they are home to diverse wildlife, lock away immense amounts of carbon, buffer against extreme weather events and offer natural water quality improvement for dependent communities. However, wastewater can be a serious problem, pollution from the water can build up and impact the health of the wetland. The Environmental Pollution Programme (EPP), led by JNCC and funded by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, is developing a rapid assessment method to evaluate the impacts of wastewater on wetland ecosystem services such as reduced soil erosion and provision of critical habitat for fish and wildlife. This method is currently being applied to nine wetlands in South Africa and was recently showcased at South Africa’s National Wetlands Indaba in the Eastern Cape to a group of wetland specialists and practitioners 🌍 The data gathered will play a critical role in informing management decisions related to wetland use, which will not only contribute towards better environmental protection, but these efforts also have the potential to significantly improve the livelihoods of people directly dependent on these wetlands 🙌 Find out more about our Environmental Pollution Programme at https://lnkd.in/erzrHk4F #WetlandResearch #SustainableDevelopment #PollutionAction #PollutionFree #TogetherForNature #TurningScienceIntoAction #ForNaturePeoplePlanet
