Our Op-Ed by Yee Fung Lee on challenges SMEs faced in digitalisation was recently published on The Straits Times. https://lnkd.in/gT_Z5GJQ The article, drawn from findings of our NBS -Smart Enabled Edition survey and ground feedback through our engagement, painted a picture of anxiety, fatigue and helplessness as SMEs struggle to keep pace with technological advancement. For some businesses, it can feel like trying to climb up a downward moving escalator that is increasingly moving faster. Business cannot afford to stay still at their current step because it means a decline, and the only way to move ahead is to climb faster than the downward speed of the escalator. The good news is that there are various avenues for SMEs to get help, particularly with the launch of the Digital Enterprise Blueprint recently by SMS Kiat How Tan. The CTOaaS is one such programme. Since it’s launch in 2022, over 92,000 users have been reported to access resources on the platform, and more than 1,600 companies have utilized the digital consultancy services. We believed more can be done to enhance the programme to help businesses move up the tech ladder at a faster pace and help them in more complex integration work. Such Op-Eds, including those published earlier, covering topics ranging from workplace integration to manpower policies to industry collaboration and free trade agreements, is an example of Singapore Business Federation policy advocacy work. Other forms include business surveys, ministerial dialogues and industry consultations. We welcome feedback and invite businesses to work with us in shaping a business environment conducive to advance Singapore as a globally competitive and sustainable economy.

How can we encourage UK SMEs to embrace AI and new technologies? 🇬🇧 Despite being ranked 5th on the Global Innovation Index, we face a significant productivity gap, with the disparity between our most and least productive firms being much larger than in other advanced economies. Only 25% of UK SMEs use basic digital tools like e-commerce and HR software. This low adoption rate is critical as AI technologies emerge. If UK companies lag in basic digital adoption, they will soon fall behind in AI adoption, threatening our competitiveness. To address this, techUK calls for better support and incentives for digital adoption among SMEs. Key recommendations include: 1. Utilising the industry-led Digital Adoption Taskforce to tackle barriers like skills, cost, and confidence. 2. Developing a coordinated strategy with clear digitalisation targets by 2030, including the completion of Making Tax Digital and phased e-invoicing. 3. Committing to growth opportunities like Open Finance and streamlined carbon reporting for SMEs. Digital adoption across SMEs presents a massive growth opportunity for the UK. Better use of digital tools could add an estimated £232 billion to the economy, while improving resilience against economic shocks.
