Here's a glimpse into what the internship entailed: -General Introduction to Data Analysis: Built a strong foundation in the core principles of data analysis. -Introduction to the Global System SAP: Gained a comprehensive understanding of SAP systems and their applications across different industries. - Nature of Network Operations: Acquired valuable insights into network operations and management. -Technical Support Service for Users: Developed the skills necessary for providing efficient and effective technical support. -Nature of Information Systems Operations: Enhanced my understanding of the operations of complex information systems. - Practical Application in the Financial Sector Module: Applied SAP modules to real-world financial scenarios, enhancing practical knowledge. -Practical Application in After-Sales Service Management: Learned to manage service centers effectively using SAP, particularly focusing on after-sales. It is just over half-time for my international assignment in Porto as an IT Graduate Trainee at Continental. While sunshine and warm temperatures, even just before Christmas, might not come as a surprise when you know you are in Portugal, there are several things that surprised me working at the same company, yet a different location. 1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Meetings should not only respect the time zone difference when scheduling with international colleagues, but ideally also their cultural „time shifts“. The regular working hours in your country might be 8:00-17:00, while in other countries it might be 09:00-18:00. Maybe you like to have your lunch between 11:30-12:30, while colleagues in another location might regularly take it around 13:00-14:00. Of course, working across locations requires some amount of flexibility, but acknowledging and considering these differences goes a long way. 2. 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 There are a lot of teams at Conti that are spread across locations. While we might be more used to forming bonds and friendships in person, I experience that these relationships can be nurtured equally well through digital channels. It requires intention and care, but so does it in an in-person setting. Personally, I like working in the office and bumping into colleagues from different teams, yet it is great to see people care so much about each other while physically distant. It speaks volumes about the culture at this company. 3. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 Continental is currently in a phase of change. I am positively impressed by the frequent communication between all levels in the organization. But what surprised me most is how news are perceived and interpreted differently across locations (receiver side), and how the same speaker might adapt their communication when targeting another location (sender side). I consider it to be highly valuable to hear the different aspects of the same story in order to see the full picture. On the other hand, I believe it is equally important for the sender side to gather how their message is interpreted in different locations. This is just one aspect why the IT Graduate Trainee program offers an invaluable experience to new graduates, as they get to grasp the interrelations in a truly international organization.
