While you may expect elaborate answers to the question "What do you miss most about home during deployment?" the reality is that service members often miss the simple comforts, such as a home-cooked meal and seeing their family each day. I am proud to work for the USO, where we provide essential connection and support throughout every stage of military life. To learn more about the impactful work of the USO, visit https://lnkd.in/edCvKqBy. #USO #militarylife #deployment
"What do you miss most about home during deployment?" Service members reflect on the personal challenges of being away from home while deployed — like missing family, friends and home-cooked meals. Their candid responses reveal the human side of military life and highlight the importance of staying connected. At the USO, we provide emotional, logistical and recreational support to service members and their families because feeling supported through every stage of military life is essential for their well-being. We're proud to be a constant companion through every deployment and life transition, helping them stay strong — because even the strongest among us need someone by their side.

As one of the designers of today's Transition Assistance Program (TAP) for the 200,000+ military service members, plus family members that discharge annually from our military services, this is an interesting read. A couple of glaring omissions struck me as I quickly reviewed this. 1) There is no discussion or recommendations regarding what in my experience is the number one issue new veterans and their families confront, and that is a/the need to generate some form of income almost immediately, and 2) Securing timely & accurate/final decisions from the VA Veterans Benefits Administration on applications for benefits or entitlements applied for, ie., from starting their GI Bill education benefits to timely decisions on applications for disability compensation or VA approving eligibility for participation for Vocational Rehabilitation & employment program. Most immediate issues for veterans in my experience rest in their immediate lack of income following their discharge. What say you?

There are THOUSANDS of free, life-changing resources available to military and veteran families, but usually, they have trouble locating the right ones. Part 5 1. Require any congressionally chartered Veteran Service Organization to disclose their major donors so veterans and the American people know who they represent when they testify before Congress. These policy transformations are vital. While there will be many discussions and deliberations along the way, we can improve the lives of veterans so long as everyone agrees that changes are needed. This is just the beginning, and many more changes will be required. But the biggest change remains the most difficult: it is imperative that we change the narrative to remind Americans that not all veterans are broken, disabled, and needy. In fact, veterans' deeds and actions demonstrate that they are not only a vital population of our nation but also flourishing leaders in our communities and continue to serve long after they leave the military.
