Loneliness at Work: A Silent Challenge for Modern Workplaces 🌟 Loneliness in the workplace is on the rise. As hybrid and remote work reshape workforce dynamics, feelings of isolation have crept into workplace culture. From new hires struggling to integrate to remote employees feeling disconnected, loneliness manifests in many forms, often leading to disengagement and higher turnover rates. 📊 The cost of loneliness is significant. Research links loneliness to reduced productivity, creativity, and job satisfaction. Disengaged employees drive absenteeism and turnover, increasing costs and fracturing team cohesion. For organisations, ignoring loneliness isn’t just a morale issue – it’s a business risk. 💡 What’s driving workplace loneliness? While remote and hybrid work models amplify isolation, deeper issues include poor communication, lack of inclusion, and rigid workplace policies. A culture focused solely on results, without prioritising relationships, leaves employees feeling invisible and undervalued. 🛠️ How can workplaces combat loneliness? Forward-thinking organisations are taking strategic steps to foster connection and belonging: 🔸Volunteering days and interest-based groups encourage camaraderie through shared purpose. 🔸Virtual co-working platforms replicate organic office interactions for remote teams. 🔸Thoughtfully designed physical spaces and structured “anchor days” create opportunities for in-office connection. 🧠 Mental health and leadership are pivotal. Providing access to counselling and mental health workshops reduces stigma and fosters a supportive environment. Managers trained to recognise loneliness and lead with vulnerability create psychological safety, encouraging authentic relationships. 🔄 Feedback and adaptability are key. Organisations must listen to employees through surveys and open forums, ensuring strategies are effective. Acting on this feedback demonstrates genuine commitment to combating loneliness. 🤝 The time to act is now. HR leaders play a crucial role in shaping connected, resilient teams. By prioritising inclusion, empathy, and belonging, businesses can unlock innovation, collaboration, and a thriving culture. #WorkplaceLoneliness #HRLeadership #EmployeeWellbeing #RemoteWork #HybridWork #EmployeeEngagement #MentalHealthMatters

🌟 Workplace Trends: Loneliness at Work - A Modern Epidemic 🌟 Loneliness is a growing workplace issue impacting engagement, productivity and well-being. Gallup’s 2024 State of the Global Workplace reports that 1 in 5 employees worldwide feels lonely at work. This is a personal problem as well as an organisational challenge that requires thoughtful action. The good news? Loneliness isn’t inevitable and there are concrete ways to address it. What We Get Wrong About Loneliness Myth #1: It’s not just about remote work While remote employees can feel isolated, being in the office doesn’t guarantee connection. Nearly half of highly lonely employees report frequent in-person interactions. Myth #2: Teams aren’t a quick fix. Simply assigning employees to teams doesn’t build bonds. Without respect and collaboration, team structures can actually increase feelings of isolation. Myth #3: It’s not solely a personal issue. Loneliness thrives in toxic or indifferent workplace cultures. Employees who feel unsupported or undervalued are more likely to experience disconnection. How to Combat Loneliness For Organisations ✅ Create a Culture of Connection. Foster empathy, inclusivity and support. Employees need to feel like they belong. ✅ Offer Simple Social Opportunities. Frequent, low-lift activities like communal lunches, happy hours or casual check-ins can encourage better relationships without major costs. ✅ Build Slack Into Workflows. Overworked employees don’t have time to connect. Adjust workloads to make space for genuine interactions. For Individuals ✔ Take the Lead. Invite colleagues for coffee or join informal chats. Small actions can build strong bonds ✔ Be Selective. Prioritise relationships that energise and inspire you. Quality matters more than quantity. ✔ Engage Beyond Work. Connections outside the office - through hobbies or volunteering - can reduce feelings of isolation in all areas of life. The Takeaway By embedding moments of humanity into our daily interactions, we can reshape work cultures into places where people reach and exceed potential. What’s one meaningful change you can champion today to build connection in your workplace? #WorkplaceWellbeing #FutureOfWork #Leadership

How crucial is wellbeing in the debate over returning to the office? Our research points to it being a key factor. For instance, 44% of employees wanting “a lot more remote work” also report feeling burned out. This suggests that people are crafting their own solutions to issues like heavy workloads, long hours, competing priorities, limited resources, and poor wellbeing. The push for more WFH makes sense—employees with flexible work arrangements generally experience less burnout and stress. Remote work might be a key part of the solution for individual employees. The takeaway? Leaders need to tackle the root causes of low wellbeing first and foremost. 👉 You can find our research here if you’re interested: https://buff.ly/3TQ0ACc #Wellbeing #Management #EmployeeExperience

🌱 Last year, the CBI conducted a survey to explore how business leaders are adapting their employee health and well-being strategies in the evolving work landscape of hybrid, on-site, and remote models. The insights offer a valuable perspective on the benefits and challenges of this major shift. Key takeaways include: 🙂 An overwhelming 65% of business leaders acknowledge an increased responsibility towards employee mental health and well-being post-pandemic, with 72% prioritizing it more than ever before. 📈 Nearly 70% reported a boost in productivity as a significant advantage of enhancing health and well-being policies since the pandemic. However, 36% admitted to lacking the time or resources to adequately support these initiatives. In the ongoing debate over remote, hybrid, and on-site work, the majority observed that remote working: a) Adversely affects employee mental well-being. b) Complicates the support for physical health. c) Leads to a decline in participation in health and well-being benefits. Interestingly, offering hybrid working emerges as a crucial factor in attracting talent, despite these concerns. This raises the question: How can leaders effectively support the health and well-being of remote staff? Active Teams is our answer to supporting both the mental and physical well-being of employees, regardless of their location. Being active is universally acknowledged as the most impactful way to enhance health and well-being for individuals of any age, gender, and physical capability. At Active Teams our focus is on increasing the time that staff spend moving and being active. We're completely agnostic as to where and when employee activity takes place. We have employees using Active Teams who are office based and completely remote all over the UK, Europe and the US. Hybrid working helps employees stay motivated, improves productivity, increases job satisfaction and reduces symptoms of burnout, research has found. Three-quarters of employees said they had seen a dramatic reduction in feelings of burnout since switching to hybrid working, while a similar proportion said they were more productive and motivated in their roles. The study involving 1,026 hybrid workers by workspace firm International Workplace Group (IWG) found that 72% experienced burnout at work before their employer switched to a hybrid working model. Since they started splitting their time between home and the office, 79% said they felt less drained and 78% less stressed, while 86% agreed they could now cope better with day-to-day life. Other wellbeing benefits of hybrid working identified by the study included workers having more time for physical exercise (54%) and better quality of sleep (68%). Sixty-eight per cent said their overall physical health had improved, while 85% were more satisfied with their jobs. Mark Dixon, IWG CEO, said: “The global shift to hybrid working is not only bringing strong productivity and financial advantages to companies and work-life balance improvements to employees, but significant health benefits too – physically, mentally and holistically. “No longer having to spend so much time commuting to central offices means that employees have more time to look after their wellbeing, but also reduces the likelihood of burnout in the workforce. Companies need to take note that not only will they have a happier, healthier workforce when they allow people to work flexibly, but people actually feel more productive and motivated.” IWG’s research adds to the growing body of evidence showing benefits from hybrid working. A study by health insurer Vitality recently found that hybrid workers tend to experience fewer formal days of sickness absence, while a report from Grant Thornton suggested it had benefits for gender balance, especially in senior roles. "Since they started splitting their time between home and the office, 79% said they felt less drained and 78% less stressed, while 86% agreed they could now cope better with day-to-day life" The numbers don't lie. A study involving over a thousand hybrid workers by IWG found that 72% experienced burnout at work before their employer switched to a hybrid working model. However that's not all. Additional benefits include having more time for physical exercise (54%) and better quality of sleep (68%). Clearly the benefits are twofold, while this is personal benefit, there is no doubt the knock on effect is improved capability and productivity at work. Is this getting through to leaders? we're not sure yet. Let us know you thoughts. #hybridworking

🛑 Stop Relying on External Reports & Surveys 🛑 --- The Answer Lies Within 🤔 There are countless number of industry surveys and data points available, aimed to help employers guide decision making. The wellness & well-being space is no exception. Rather than using those as the "end all be all", they should all be taken with a grain of salt and used for exploring all options. But Matt, you post stats from surveys ALL the time. 🙄 Yes - I do. General statistics from industry leaders can give you the big picture. They provide guidance on what to explore, where to look, and what others are experiencing. But --- only your own data will show you the real story of your employees and organization. Here is a really good example of why you shouldn't soley rely on external reports/survey: 1️⃣ New research reveal hybrid workers are most likely to say that work has a negative toll on their mental health, with two-fifths (42%) reporting that work negatively affects their mental wellbeing, compared to 32% of fully remote and 30% of fully office-based employees. ( https://bit.ly/3YPw66C) On the other hand.... 🖐 2️⃣ Gallup research found that "76% of full-time hybrid workers in the U.S. most often cite improved work-life balance as a top advantage of hybrid work." It's even stronger with remote workers with 85% improved work-life balance is among the greatest benefits of remote work. https://bit.ly/4csuP8W So does hybrid work have a negative toll on mental well-being, or is it positive for improved work-life balance...or both...or neither...or.... 🌟 It's time to move beyond industry averages and focus on what truly matters—your people. 🌟 Surveying your employees provides insights that no external report or "industry leader" can match. Your next great people initiative starts from listening to the people who matter. 👇 How are you currently taking the "employee voice" into consideration when making key decisions that impact them? #EmployeeVoice #PeopleFirst #EmployeeEngagement #Culture #WorkplaceWellbeing #Benchmarking

The Post Covid Workplace. How can businesses keep teams productive and engaged in a post-COVID, hybrid work environment? Since COVID-19 𝟳𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 as hybrid work has shifted from a perk to an expectation. One of the biggest challenges we heard in this area was that the pressure to "do more with less" has intensified, leading to HR leaders having serious concerns about burnout and what is being asked of people increasing the pressure to “do more with less.” Leaders face challenges in managing remote teams, fostering connection, and ensuring productivity. This pressure often strains employees, especially without adequate support. 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀. Siemens leads by example, pairing hybrid work with resilience training and mental health initiatives. This strategy has resulted in a 12% boost in productivity and a 17% reduction in absenteeism (Harvard Business Review), illustrating how supportive, flexible environments drive lasting engagement. Through our research we found that where organisations won’t take responsibility at a macro level then HR leaders are focusing learning and development interventions to empower individuals to set boundaries, say no and advocate for themselves and their teams.
