We are thrilled to announce that Mark McArdle has joined the Cornerstone team! Mark brings with him an illustrious career in politics, marked by significant contributions and reforms. Elected to the Queensland Parliament in 2004, he has served as the Leader of the Queensland Liberal Party, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, and Minister of Energy and Water Supply, where he was instrumental in implementing pivotal reforms to the electricity system. A life member of the Liberal National Party in Queensland , Mark has continued to influence the political landscape even after his retirement in 2020. Mark's extensive networks and experience in Queensland and his deep understanding of the government-business relationship make him a valuable addition to our team. As a founding member of the LNP in Queensland his presence further strengthens Cornerstone’s bipartisan approach to our advocacy and representation. Mark's direct involvement with our clients will ensure that they receive tailored, informed guidance that leverages his understanding of government and the regulatory landscapes. He joins our active and engaged board members, the Hon Craig Laundy and the Hon Jaala Pulford.

You can have the smartest, most committed and experienced people in your team. The opportunity can be the most exciting in a generation. But it will go wrong if you haven’t created a team based on a shared purpose, defined roles and an environment where everyone has each other’s backs. Of course, No 10 is not like most workplaces. Politics is a monster of an industry – intense scrutiny, a relentless pace, an impossible number of competing priorities. But as has become clear over the past few weeks, the team dynamics at play are not unique. Keir Starmer now has a critical opportunity to forge an effective team. In a bold move, the Prime Minister has shuffled his key advisors, bringing together a new, updated set of smart, committed, experienced people. So here’s a quick plea – whether you are the Prime Minister or the leader of any new team born out of a challenging situation – before you start the thousand mile an hour sprint that will be the next five years, sit down and have the difficult conversations together. - Be honest about what has just happened and what can be learned. - Put it all out on the table and agree a shared way forward. - Think about what’s going to get in the way and talk about how you’ll deal with it. - Be explicit that the needs of the whole are more important than personal victories. - Hold each other to account respectfully. Too much to ask? Maybe. But even the most talented people can't build a team without talking.

What does community power and decision making look like in Greater Manchester? A thought provoking question isn’t it and to each of us it may mean something different!? I was recently fortunate enough to attend a GM Live Well event regarding growing community power to tackle inequalities in health and wellbeing and this was the overarching question during their workshops . The workshops left me reflecting on what community power meant to me….which is- The importance of actively listening and understanding the needs of the community without making assumption’s. Respecting and valuing that residents know more about their community than any service provider, therefore they should be at the forefront of making decisions affecting them and the services they need. Community cohesion, where all residents feel included and opportunities created for residents to work together. Communities coming together and organising themselves defines true leadership which provides strength, in turn this creates community power through uniting over a common purpose. There’s a close connection between community power and consumer standards and one thing I find refreshing is knowing I work in a team and for an Organisation that truly understands the importance of putting our residents and communities at the forefront of every decision we make!

A week tomorrow 🙂 Looking forward to this immensely. In the world of policy making people often talk about the VCSE sector as a last option when the public/private sectors can’t deliver something. Having worked across all three of those sectors, there is a clear societal and fiscal case for us to give the VCSE sector much more careful thought. As providers that think place- and people-first (Possabilities are incredible at this); as innovation partners to co-create solutions to our most complex challenges; as the organisations that create energy, action and care in our places. Looking at our VCSE sectors as a central element of a flourishing place (as we would with businesses) is a huge opportunity for place leaders, which people in local gov, health and the sector itself often tell me is largely untapped.

A joy to listen to Brooke Massender, Jo Renkin and Jilly Field yesterday - fierce veterans of the sector. An abundance of clarity, expertise and care. As Brooke tackled the history of pro bono and Jo talked through the current issues, my mind was in deep reflection. Jilly came to the discussion with what the future may hold. It is essential to apply critical thinking when working in ‘social justice’ in the corporate sector. I am grateful to Jilly for her continued advocacy by pushing boundaries and escaping the comfort zone through sharing the need to be realistic in our response to marginalisation. To advance and grow as a sector, uncomfortable discussions must occur. An echo chamber will only serve to maintain the equilibrium and we know that is simply not acceptable. The sector is slowly diversifying and when hiring people from lived experience, we must think about the reality of that lived experience. From a First Nations lens, some of my considerations are: 🟢How will performance be assessed outside of Eurocentric models? 🟢 What layers of cultural safety exist and is there a willingness to collaborate on developing policies to address any gaps, including issues of colonial load? 🟢 How will the position be titled and will the role be able to create change? 🟢 What does progression and remuneration look like, how are KPI’s measured?
