Looking forward to discussing future R&D needs for the combustion community in a net zero society. This plenary session will be held at the 40th International Symposium on Combustion in Milan, Italy this summer. I’ll highlight the evolution of fuels from their current role as primary energy sources, to their future primary role as energy carriers. I will also survey the intersection of combustion science and technology with other societal considerations, including regulatory, environmental justice, geopolitical, and economic drivers. Finally, I will highlight implications for researchers, engineering executives, and regulatory/certification oversight bodies. Lots of important combustion R&D needs remain due to needs to increase thermal efficiency, high operational flexibility, low particulate and NOx emissions, and fuel flexibility.
With the #40thISOC fast approaching, we are excited to continue highlighting our distinguished slate of invited speakers: One of this symposium’s Plenary Lectures will be delivered by Tim Lieuwen of Georgia Institute of Technology! We thank Prof. Lieuwen for lending his expertise to the 40th ISOC. Learn more about the invited speakers: https://lnkd.in/eszfwzfm #TheCombustionInstitute #Combustion

The successful innovation pool project on Research Software Engineering (RSE) - HiRSE_PS - will be continued until the end of 2027 as “Helmholtz Information - Research Software Engineering” (HiRSE). 🎉 HiRSE brings together all programs and centers in the Helmholtz Research Field Information to support the establishment of central RSE activities and the targeted sustainable promotion of strategically important codes by decentralized Community Software Infrastructure (CSI) groups as two mutually beneficial aspects. It also organises platforms like the HiRSE seminar series. ➡️ More information:https://buff.ly/3WtrMYJ Helmholtz Information Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft / Helmholtz Association Forschungszentrum Jülich Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)

Attending the annual OLN workshop, this year about "Imagining the Future" and co-hosted by SLAC Nat'l Accelerator Lab. In this panel discussion, Scott Hsu commented that "fusion is really at the nexus of DOE." Started from the nat'l security mission, potentially transforming the energy supply, and rich with intellectually compelling science needing large facilities, computing, and talented teams. To plug myself, am leading a session with colleague and fellow OSELP alum Despina M using the "unConference" format. Looking forward to it!

I just finished this webinar with SAICE on using AI in industry. We looked at AI playing a key role with humans versus taking away jobs from humans, but then the new technology of the robot taxing was being tested, and our speaker Brian Downie asked what happens when the AI takes over its code. Then Kim Timm introduced 3D concrete fresh off the international conference. I am currently doing Design 2 and wonder how the 3D Printed concrete would hold up to failers in slab-to-column connections in multi-story buildings where these conditions get tricky 🤔 Lastly, Ricardo Lopes stole the show with Lidar technology and showed its power to map its surroundings accurately. It is super interesting, and I would like to explore the technology side of civil engineering more. 👨🎓 Super Informative!
🚨 Reminder 🚨 There's still time to register and join us this afternoon at 16:00 for an insightful session on "Understanding Local and Global Societal Dependency on Technology," hosted by the SAICE Academy in association with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (NRF SAASTA). Register here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gDkUudB3 Our panellists will explore the development of technology over time, how it is being used in our industry and what impact it will have on society in the future!
