Imagine - supermarkets, bus stops, warehouses out of wood? There seems to be consensus that building out of wood, when forests are properly managed, is an excellent way to both add to the amount of stored carbon and avoid emissions. Yet, we’re not doing it enough. Sure, building high rise apartment buildings and offices from wood at scale would be great and there are solutions out there, but there is so much more potential still in low rise buildings. This week while on holiday in Austria, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the high number of hotels, bus stops and shops made out of wood. But seeing a really beautiful combined ski lift station and museum made out of wood got me thinking. We should really push our boundaries when thinking about what non-residential buildings we could build out of wood. Ski lift stations are hardly what I think about in terms of architectural beauty, yet when made out of wood, the sense of quality is so quickly elevated. With replicable concepts, I’m sure cost competitiveness is there!

I provided them with these tips, sourced from a mix of marketing research, observation, trial, errors, and a few wins. 1. Follow people and watch what they do. 2. Imagine you are at an industry event and chatting with a small group of professionals. Think about something that excites you that you'd like to share with them. 3. Be brave and post about that thing. 4. Repeat. (Worry about themes and business development goals later. Get used to posting first.) Good posts tend to be those that are a mix of your authentic and professional self. Use candid photos or videos over branded ones. We tested the branded imagery over candid shots and the raw, imperfect visuals can get more attention than the perfect imagery on LinkedIn.

Even if you only have a mild interest in Scotch whisky, you’re likely aware that The Macallan has undertaken a massive and truly groundbreaking construction of a new distillery. Located on the Macallan Estate, just a short distance from the original distillery, this new production facility stands out for its exceptional and unique design, layout, appearance, and functionality. Additionally, the new distillery offers a distinctive approach to whisky tourism and visitor engagement. Announced in 2012, construction of the new distillery spanned from 2014 until the first spirit flowed from the stills in December 2017. Designed by the renowned architects Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, the project cost a reported £140 million—a significant investment requiring the sale of a substantial number of no-age-statement bottles to recoup the expense! The distillery’s design is partially embedded into the hillside, featuring a green roof with uniquely shaped mounds that give the impression of the facility being entirely underground. Each mound conceals production hubs, as well as the visitor center and bar area. Unsurprisingly, the distillery has won numerous industry awards for architecture, design, construction, innovation, and sustainability. It truly stands apart from any other distillery in Scotland. 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 - when it comes to these three keywords, Hamburg residents probably have the 𝗦𝘁. 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗶 𝗯𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗿 in mind. This special project not only fits seamlessly into the list of Hamburg's great sights, it is now on our project list! The “Green Bunker” was opened on July 5, 2024 and is already regarded as the new Hashtag#landmark for Hamburg’s younger crowd. No wonder, because the bunker offers plenty for everyone. 👉 Inside, it features a hotel, several restaurants, and a versatile hall for sports and cultural events. 👉 Outside, visitors are greeted by a true highlight: the newly created rooftop garden, Hamburg’s highest, accessible via a 560-meter-long landscaped "mountain path" that spirals around the exterior of the building. This publicly accessible oasis offers a space for urban gardening or simply enjoying the breathtaking panoramic views. 🌳🌷 About 80 years ago, this would have been unimaginable. Constructed in 1942, the bunker was originally designed primarily for air defense during World War II, providing shelter for up to 25,000 people during air raids. Today, the bunker, which was extended by five floors as part of the renovation, is a permanent feature of the St. Pauli cityscape and is a living space for many Hamburg residents. 🌸 🌲 We are delighted to have been involved in this outstanding project. When preserving and renovating a historical structure, a specified construction sequence is required to maintain stability of that structure that is being preserved. This involves understanding the existing conditions, understanding the final conditions, knowing what modifications need to occur and how that works with the temporary bracing considerations. A team like Plan B Engineering that specifies in construction engineering, or specifying the "means and methods" of construction is the best suited to support these types of projects.
