World Ocean’s Day: Celebrating with the 2023 OBEL AWARD Winner, Living Breakwaters by SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC June 8 is World Oceans Day, designated by the UN General Assembly in 2008. The day was established to raise awareness about human beings' connection with the oceans. The OBEL AWARD has always advocated connecting the built and natural environments. Our oceans and other bodies of water are not just resources; they are lifelines. They generously provide us with food, biodiversity, transportation, economic benefits, leisure, and the health of people and the planet. The 2023 OBEL Award-winning project exemplifies how working with nature can bring long-lasting positive changes. Thanks to this restorative project, the underwater ecosystem in Staten Island, NY, is undergoing a phenomenal transformation. Widely considered a model for climate-adaptive green infrastructure, Living Breakwaters is a project with a layered approach to risk reduction, enhancing biodiversity as well as physical, ecological, and social resilience along the South Shore of Staten Island. #WorldOceansDay To learn more: https://lnkd.in/d6bMEsfh

The Kendeda Building: Part 3 - Take the tour! I hope you have enjoyed our three part series on this incredible building. The value of these cutting edge projects to me is more than showcasing best practices and offering lesson's learned. They are the shining beacon of what success looks like when the whole is truly greater than the sum of the parts. We are in the middle of transforming our built environment to be regenerative. Most of the buildings we are building and renovating now are both better than where we have come from and not as good as where we want to go. We have to embrace that messiness as we continue the transformation and keep perspective that the mid-way efforts don't gain all the benefits of the more mature approach. Where we are now: [fossil fueled, energy intensive, low performing buildings] -> -> -> (the messy middle we are in now) -> -> -> [renewably energized, efficient, regenerative buildings] The Kendeda Building to me embodies this more mature approach to regenerative building practices. The ethos of regeneration pervades the project, it is palpable in the experience of the space, and as you peel back the layers of the project you find more and more ways in which it was a humble steward of its local environment. This video tour is extremely well produced and I encourage you to watch it all the way through to the great bloopers at the end! https://buff.ly/4e2mE5e

I’m thrilled to share one of my favorite maps from our lab course project: the infrastructure system map for the city of Rozzano. This map was inspired by Bernardo Secchi’s and Paola Viganò’s visionary work on Le Grand Paris. Map Highlights: • Road Network: Detailed layout of motorways, ring roads, and primary and secondary roads. • Sustainable Mobility: Dedicated bicycle paths and pedestrian connections. • Public Transport: Integration of Tram line 15, Bus lines 201, 220, 328, and Metro line M2. Inspiration from Le Grand Paris: Bernardo Secchi’s Le Grand Paris project aimed to transform Paris into a more connected and sustainable city. Inspired by this, our map for Rozzano focuses on: 1. Integrated Transport: Creating seamless connections between different modes of transport. 2. Sustainability: Promoting green mobility options like cycling and walking. 3. Accessibility: Ensuring all parts of the city are easily reachable. Working on this project taught me so much about urban planning and sustainable development and deepened my love for territorial maps. #UrbanPlanning #SustainableCity #Rozzano #InspiredBySecchi #StudentProject

✨Exciting Milestone for ULI in Poland! 🇵🇱 On September 18, #Tricity welcomed ULI, marking the Urban Land Institute's presence in the Tricity Agglomeration. Outside of Warsaw, Triciity is the first region in the country to host ULI and we couldn't have asked for a better start! The turnout exceeded our expectations, with invaluable contributions from key leaders. A special thanks to the Mayors who welcomed us: • #AleksandraDulkiewicz, Mayor of #Gdansk • Magdalena Czarzyńska - Jachim, Mayor of #Sopot • #AleksandraKosiorek, Mayor of #Gdynia Our gratitude also goes to Carlo Castelli for his thought-provoking presentation on the complex relationship between cities and water. The examples of how water defines cities' success were inspiring, highlighting both the beauty and the challenges that this natural element brings to urban planning. Another huge thanks to Piotr Lorens for sharing such a compelling vision of how essential dialogue is in shaping city spaces through collaboration with all stakeholders. Thank you to Katarzyna Gruszecka - Spychała, a long term ULI member, for sharing her inspiring journey with ULI and underlining the tangible benefits for our members. And finally, thank you to Izabela Disterheft, our ULI Ambassador in Tricity, for making this event in Tricity a reality! ✨ We were also lucky to enjoy the stunning venue at Olivia Star / Olivia Centre, offering panoramic views of the city from the 34th floor. Thank you for hosting us. Here’s to an exciting future for ULI in the Tricity region and in Poland! 🚀 Marcin Juszczyk, Dorota Wysokińska-Kuzdra, Malgorzata Anna Poreba #ULI #UrbanLandInstitute #UrbanDevelopment #WaterfrontCities ULI Europe
