Who else forgot that just 4 years ago, Nigel Ng was still a struggling average comedian? And today, he’s closing in on 10m YouTube subscribers and now an owner of a fried rice restaurant in one of the most atas malls in Malaysia…he does seem unstoppable. And while I think selling RM40 fried rice in Malaysia (of all places) isn’t gonna fly in the long term… …the way he built his brand is a remarkable case study. Here’s how he did it: 1️⃣ Distinct Character He went for the grumpy Asian uncle and fully committed to that persona. It gave him permission to “insult” people without them feeling insulted. This caricature appealed him to a global audience, as it gave them an insight and curiosity into what “Asian-ness” or “Chinese-ness” is. Whereas, most SG or MY channels tend to speak to a local or regional crowd. 2️⃣ Create a Villain He found a celebrity chef whose success far surpassed his… and hit him hard. This was one of the darker strategies that Nigel used… Reputation Inflammation. But it was also smartly integrated into an elegant mission - Authentic Asian Food VS westernized Asian Food. He drew more eyeballs. More people hated Jamie Oliver, more people defended Jamie Oliver. But all of them watched his videos I would personally struggle with this strategy as my conscience can’t manage this 🤣…but Nigel toed the line well. 3️⃣ Brand Elevation At first, he was known as the Fried Rice guy. However, there’s only so much video reviews you can do on that… He then made this slight shift. Fried Rice went from being a dish, to being a symbol for Asian Food. This allowed him to branch out into other Asian cuisines with ease. If you asked Nigel just 4 years ago if he’d ever know how far he has come, I’d bet this is far beyond his imagination. A Brand changed his life. A Brand changed mine. …and while I don’t think I’d ever pay RM40 for fried rice in Malaysia… I believe a Brand will also change your life.

NA Beverages at venues is a topic that I get fired up about every time someone mentions it. Howie Schnee brought it up when talking about Late Nights at venues in our recent Event Vesta podcast episode and I had this little rant that got cut from the full episode. I can personally see how much money venues are leaving on the table by not having quality non-alcoholic options. Just because I don't drink doesn't mean I'm a child and want a coca-cola. Given no good options, I'll spend $0 during a night out drinking just water. But, give me solid NA options like Dry Spokes or Pageturners Lounge in Omaha do, and I'll spend $30+ in a night. The whole crew I'm out with are light drinks or sober as well, so they'll follow the same pattern. It's not just about creating an inclusive space for people who don't drink to enjoy your events, it's also about revenue.
