Your agent or manager will not handle all the promotional expenses needed to make your creation successful. ✅ Instead, set 10-20% of your budget aside from the jump (and plan to raise more!). ❌. $1k isn't enough money. $5k isn't enough money. $10k isn't enough money. ✅ Engage a publicity/promotional team BEFORE launch (ideally 2 months+). ❌. Don't expect the entertainment industry to function like it did 20 years ago. It won't. ✅ Be proactive, not reactive. And when you're ready for the world to see you and your creation, let's chat. 📞

Nothing quite like seeing a Video Game released with +1M downloads ready for people to play with my voice in it - yet the recording/outsource studio that hired me have still failed to pay me for my studio time + buyout. Let's face it, LinkedIn UK VO network. We all know who this studio is. And they love making up their own terms and excuses as to why they can't pay. Why are they getting away with it? - Quick notes: Yes, my invoices have T&Cs on them. Yes, I've chased them. No, they never stated when casting me that their terms are '60' days (we're over that now) until I contacted them 30 days after I sent my first invoice. Yes, I've reinvoiced with late fees attached to be met with an OoO email - but producer has been CC'd. Yes, this studio are doing this with multiple freelancers and on multiple projects in varying positions. Yes, I know Equity are a great help! - 🗣🎙🎮 www.thomasmitchells.co.uk

Great news, they paid! But a few things that make me nervous after my first...and most likely only interaction with this studio: - They blamed cashflow issues for not paying talent, citing that they couldn't remit artists because the end client didn't pay. The irony in a salaried employee telling someone why they can't be paid on time. - They did not respect the post-60 day late fee & interest I slapped on the updated invoice despite that being actual legislation. - They paid out from someone's PERSONAL bank account which, yes, may give away the studio to some as well as being dodgy. - Upon offering me the gig, they said they take 20% commission off my fee as if they were my agent rather than booking me as a freelancer and paying me my full amount because...they'd rather take some cream off the top of some 'little guy's' fee? As the job was so inconsequential and small, I didn't bother arguing this one...but I know people who sunk in a lot more time that have definitely been shafted a fair bit of money. - It took them an hour to record 9 lines because there was barely any prep done from both themselves and the client. Communication was dire and the session was poorly optimised for efficiency. This studio just don't grasp Game Dialogue Recording yet. - In their further excuses they labelled themselves a small company...despite having multiple addresses. I don't like to lambast companies that provide potential employment out in the open like this but when a company refuses to respect the freelancer industry by diminishing standards - thinking it's acceptable to not pay them after services rendered in reasonable terms - it does not make me want to work with them in the future. BE. CAREFUL. If you hear of the same issues coming from multiple sources - it's definitely worth being cautious. I would be very surprised if this company doesn't end up on Equity's black list eventually!
