Wetlands are the kidneys of the world and store huge amounts of carbon in their black soil. Lack of oxygen at the bottom of wetlands prevents organic matter from degrading and it accumulates rapidly. Look for black soils in agricultural lands, they were once wetlands and could be restored. Aquatic plants pump oxygen to their roots to grow in these conditions and a diversa microbial community flurishes around the roots.
