For the past 30 years, Cosmetics Europe has led the development of robust test methods to determine various sun protection measurements, including Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The Double Plate Method (DPM) is one of them. It is a fully vitro SPF test method and an alternative to the currently used in vivo International Standard. A key attribute of the DPM is that it can be used any time of the year. The current international standard method is based on testing the efficacy of a sun protection product on volunteers’ skin, which must not be tanned. This can be difficult to ensure in the summertime. The DMP uses polymer plates to test the sun protection product and therefore can be employed all year round.

𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬?😵 Within the Personal Care industry, it’s not unusual for certain ingredients to receive their fair share of scaremongering 🤪 Last week I spoke to a candidate who opened my eyes to the dangers of talc in cosmetics. Reflecting upon the cosmetic products I use daily, it shocked me how many powder based products contain large quantities of talc. Talc is a an extremely soft naturally occurring mineral, added to makeup to create a silky texture, to absorb moisture & prevent a ‘caking’ finish 🍰 Interestingly, industry leaders L'Oréal, Revlon, CHANEL have publicly removed talc from their products, due to asbestos claims 💄 Are you an R&D professional in the Personal Care Contract Manufacturing industry? I would love to learn more about this topic from professionals in my industry 🤔👩🔬🔬 #personalcare #beautyindustry #contractmanufacturing #cosmetics Source: https://lnkd.in/eQra_DiM

🚨 This week's cosmetic product recalls in the EU (week 47)🚨 All cosmetic products should be safe for consumer health. But sometimes, a defective product enters the EU market. To catch faulty products, the EU has implemented a rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products known as SafetyGate, previously called the “Rapid Exchange of Information System” (RAPEX). This week 25 cosmetic product got recalled ➡️ 23 products containing Lilial (BMHCA) and/or HICC (Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde), which are prohibited fragrance substances. ➡️ 1 product was found to have incorrect labeling, failing to indicate that it should be used in combination with sunscreen. This poses a risk to users, as they may unknowingly remain unprotected against UV radiation, increasing their chances of sunburn or skin cancer. ➡️ 1 product indicating a sun protection of 50+ but was measured to have a value up to 27. This product therefore misinformes the user of the protection levels which can lead to serious skin sunburn, long term skin injuries and skin cancer. 🔥🔥 So let's learn from these mistakes to make cosmetic products even safer. #RAPEX #cosmeticssafety #Skinsights #RAPEXradar #SafetyGate

How FDA Determined That Up to 10 ppm Lead in These Products Would Not Pose a Health Risk Exposure to lead from lipstick is mainly by swallowing, such as after a consumer licks her lips, so we used the same approach for cosmetic lip products that we use to estimate exposure to lead from food. We determined that exposure to 10 ppm lead from incidental ingestion of cosmetic lip products is very small and cannot be measured in routine blood testing. Exposure to lead from other cosmetics is by absorption through the skin, but the amount absorbed is very small. This means that exposure to lead from a product such as eye shadow or body lotion is even lower than exposure to lead from a lipstick or other lip cosmetic, and also cannot be measured in routine blood testing. Based on these factors, we concluded that up to 10 ppm lead in cosmetic lip products and externally applied cosmetics would not pose a health risk. https://lnkd.in/dVweJJCg

Benzophenone-4 is currently regulated as a UV-filter in sunscreen products in a concentration up to 5 % (Annex VI/22). It absorbs UV light across a broad range of UV wavelengths and, therefore, protects the skin from damage by UVB and UVA light. The concerns related to potential endocrine disrupting properties were checked and SCCS concluded that benzophenone-4 is safe when used as UV filter up to a maximum concentration of 5% in sunscreen, face and hand cream, all leave-on and rinse-off products, lipstick, sunscreen propellant spray and pump spray, when used separately or in combination.
