The #PPWR proposal is one the most complex and controversial files of the end of this legislature. It entails many technical aspects with even more ramifications in virtually all economic sectors, making it simply impossible for the legislators to picture all of its possible consequences. At Cosmetics Europe - The Personal Care Association we work constructively to show how the cosmetics industry invests in innovative packaging waste reduction strategies, and provided recommendations to the policymakers on how to avoid hidden regulatory pitfalls which may worsen rather improve the environmental performance of cosmetics packaging. Ahead of the last trilogue meeting on the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation #PPWR, Cosmetics Europe stresses the importance to adopt measures on packaging minimisation, secondary packaging, the information on the packaging of small cosmetic products and the volume of hotel miniature cosmetic products that align with both the environmental and competitiveness objectives of the EU. This week, the European Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) approved amendments to the European Commission’s EU Pharma Package. These proposals will set the direction for the future of health innovation in Europe. So where are we now, and what does this mean for the biopharmaceutical industry in Europe and most importantly, for patients? While there have been some improvements, the facts of the matter remain the same: the overall impact of the current proposals will make Europe a less desirable location for life sciences research. One concern is the erosion of Regulatory Data Protection (RDP) – a vital form of Intellectual Property (IP) which stimulates research in to the latest medical breakthoughs.   Our industry is not alone in seeing the link between IP rights and EU competitiveness.  Just in the last few weeks, Belgian Prime Minister,  Alexander De Croo, and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, endorsed the 'Antwerp Declaration', which calls for a smarter innovation framework in Europe by, among other things, protecting IP rights. Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, Ebba Busch, and Minister for Health Care, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, also released a statement underscoring the need for strong incentives to promote biopharmaceutical innovation, referencing RDP specifically.    We now look ahead to April, when MEPs will vote in plenary, formalizing the European Parliament’s position on the EU Pharma Package. With the guardrails now set by ENVI, Pfizer remains committed to working collaboratively and providing experience and expertise to draft a legislation that will support, and not hinder, the research, development and manufacturing of innovative treatments in the EU.
