I am constantly amazed by the power of collaboration and teamwork in medicine. Our multidisciplinary thoracic tumor board is a perfect example of our commitment to this. But it is also thrilling when we get to prove our colleagues wrong. Just recently, we had a patient with suspected metastatic disease who was offered surgery for diagnosis because a CT biopsy was not an option. However, the patient wanted to move quickly and try a bronchoscopic biopsy instead. The tumor board team was doubtful that a bronchoscopic approach in this small very peripheral lesion would 1) get a diagnosis 2) get enough tissue for staining nor 3) get tissue for molecular testing But we met all 3 goals in less than a week after consultation. How? Robotic Bronchoscopy (Ion) + Advanced Imaging (Cios) + Mini-cryoprobe (Erbe) + Our Dedicated Procedural Team ➡️ Better success rates. We do more of these procedure than anyone nearby, one of the highest volume centers nationally. It's moments like these that remind me of the importance of being open-minded, try new approaches, and invest in the equipment & personnel for the best team based care. #teamwork #collaboration #medicine #bronchoscopy #cancerdiagnosis Note: Patient permission obtained. Congratulations to Dr. Ryan Margolis, PhD and group of Dr. Junjie Lie for your article comparing ex vivo contrast agents in Quantitative Imaging in Medicine and Surgery journal! We are delighted to learn that MediLumine's Vascupaint contrast agent was compared to lead based microfil and Barium Sulfate contrast agents with this original technique of transcarotid micro-cannulation scanned on the OI/CT small animal imaging system from MILabs. Vascupaint offered a more uniform filling compared to the other contrast agents using this perfusion and imaging technique. Spinal navigation may cause approximately 1 cancer for every 1000 kids treated for scoliosis. Im really proud of this research collaboration between Brigham and Boston Children's Hospital and hope it raises awareness... Navigation in spine surgery is quickly becoming the standard of care, but it is not without risks, especially in our young scoliosis populations, who are predominantly female and particularly vulnerable to the effects of radiation and risk of cancer. We need to raise awareness and drive innovative spine technologies and protocols that optimize the efficacy and safety of spine surgery and reduce radiation exposure. #spine #spinesurgery #spinehealth #scoliosis #harvard Our full article in the Spine Journal is available at the link below https://lnkd.in/eAxr34kq

I applaud this work from Andrew Simpson, MD, MBA! This data seems crucial to help surgeons decide whether it is worth navigating or - if you extrapolate this study - to screw verification (thanks Ryan Morton, MD, FAANS to point this out). It also keeps the whole community honest - there has been a lot of "low-dose" and even "no dose" marketing out there! At nView medical we believe that navigation and screw verification are both crucial, but we have developed novel ways to create 3D images with less radiation and to have AP & LAT long film images to minimize the total radiation to the patient. Are we pushing the envelope in this quality vs. safety trade-off? Let me know your thoughts!

#AMCDiscoveries Researchers from Singapore General Hospital (SGH), National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), Duke-NUS Medical School and SingHealth evaluated the cost-effectiveness of open, laparoscopic, and robotic liver resection. They concluded that laparoscopic liver resection represents a more cost-effective option for hepatectomy with superior postoperative outcomes and shorter length of stay than open liver resection. Robotic liver resection, though costlier than laparoscopic liver resection, along with laparoscopic liver resection, consistently exceeds open liver resection in surgical performance. Congratulations to NEURINSIGHT LLC on their recent #STTR Fast-Track award. Their project is entitled "Towards intra-operative guidance in brain tumor surgery using real-time resting-state functional MRI". Resting-state #functionalMRI (#rsfMRI) is a rapidly developing task-free approach for presurgical mapping. It can complement task-based functional MRI (#tfMRI) in patients who have difficulties performing tasks and map resting state networks in regions not typically mapped with tfMRI due to time constraints, such as frontal cortex. The project builds on #TurboFIRE, a powerful real-time tfMRI and rsfMRI analysis software tool for high-speed fMRI, that has shown clinically acceptable concordance of real-time high-speed multi-echo rsfMRI with tfMRI, and intra-operative electrocortical stimulation. The technology has clinical and commercial potential for a wide range of neurological and psychiatric applications beyond #presurgicalmapping in patients with #braintumors.
