Everybody wins!! This concept is central to high quality public engagement with science (PES). In our Practice Brief on the Reciprocal element of the SCRREE Framework, we share the importance of creating PES activities with the expectation that everyone involved (scientists included) can and will benefit from being in communication with one another. The brief provides a continuum of engagement ideas that was created by the Building with Biology project (https://lnkd.in/eWcHqpJx) - thanks to Larry Bell and Elizabeth Kunz Kollmann for sharing it and for reviewing early versions of this brief. It also shares an applied example through an In Action story from Ken Dunton and the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystem (BLE) LTER. BLE conducts research in Alaska, near the small village of Kaktovik. The brief shares the relationship between BLE and the village, with multiple examples of how they have supported one another over the years. https://ble.lternet.edu/ Want to check out all six Practice Briefs? TrACEES Soil Node is proud to receive the RIC Research Infrastructure Investment Fund (RIIF) 2024 grant for the acquisition of the LECO CNS928 analyzer. This advanced instrument has been supported from a consortium of 10 collaborative schools and research groups, will bolster our precision in analysing carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur content in diverse soil and agricultural samples. This enhancement will drive forward our research in soil health, agricultural productivity, food quality, and broader biosciences, strengthening our commitment to impactful and cutting-edge science. We extend our gratitude to RIC RIIF and all who contributed to this successful application. We look forward to supporting our research community with the new technology and enabling ongoing and future research. #tracees #soilscience #researchinfracture

Eight Vice Chancellors of leading universities in Kenya visited recently visited ICIPE - International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, on a study tour to discuss scientific training, research and commercialisation of research outputs, with emphasis on technology transfer processes. University of Embu Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) Riara University Daystar University, University of Nairobi South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Maasai Mara University and Rongo University of Science &Technology. The visit was facilitated by Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA). A highlight of the visit was a mini-exhibition showcasing icipe’s research products in #biopesticides, #InsectsforFoodandFeed, #bees, and #silk; followed by a presentation on icipe’s research outputs in Animal, Environmental, Plant, and Human health. Other capacity-strengthening initiatives under icipe’s like the PASET-Rsif, which collaborates with universities in and outside of Africa to support the training of PhD and MSc students, and #BioInnovateAfrica Programme, which supports researchers in building entrepreneurial skills and commercializing their research outputs, were highlighted. The visit shows a commitment by Kenyan universities to drive innovation and address national challenges through research and technology transfer. The VCs acknowleged the need to create enabling environments for research and innovation within their respective universities, especially by strengthening their technology transfer offices. Key recommendations were that universities should update Intellectual Property policies, ensure research is value-driven, explore private sector partnerships, offer entrepreneurial training, engage with policymakers, and enhance procurement and operational efficiencies. One the side of icipe more community and stakeholder engagement to broaden its impact was suggested. These steps aim to foster a vibrant innovation ecosystem in Africa, strengthen collaboration between research institutions and government agencies, and contribute to Africa's economic growth and social progress. This visit serves as a catalyst for future partnerships and knowledge exchange, positioning Africa at the forefront of scientific advancement and development.
