⭐ Student Spotlight ⭐ Meet Lenna K., a current George Mason University – Costello College of Business student with concentrations in Finance and Accounting. Lenna is a Finance & Accounting Intern with General Dynamics Information Technology. She shared that, "This summer, I will be working as a Finance & Accounting Intern at General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT). I received assistance from the Costello Office of Career Services in their resume review sessions, interview preparation workshops, and career advising sessions to help me determine what fields and companies would best suit my area of interest. For other students, I always recommend having multiple people you trust review your resume, along with constantly updating it yourself. I also strongly suggest students apply for any job they feel they are interested in, even if they do not meet all of the qualifications. There is a learning curve with every role, and most of the time, the skills a student has already learned, whether in the classroom or otherwise, will transfer over. More likely than not, you will be asked back for an interview, and get closer to an offer." #CostelloMeansBusiness

Still looking for a finance internship this summer? Stop online applications. Stop refreshing LinkedIn jobs. Stop applying to the postings on your school’s career portal. Being this late in the game, Assuming you didn’t start yesterday… There’s a 0% chance an offer falls into your lap. Mass applying is a good strategy if… Your resume alone can get you interviews. Most can’t. Don’t fret! There’s still time to land something for the summer. But a new approach is in order. One that is tedious. Requiring multiple hours of elbow grease. But that will undoubtedly work for you. So if you’re tired of… ❌ Stressing out over your blank resume ❌ Doubting your ability to break into capital markets roles ❌ And getting your application ghosted, ➡ DM me “2024” and I will help you. 😁 (exact steps in the comments)

We need to do more than change the 150-hour rule if we want to bring more candidates—and more diversity—into accounting. During graduation season, I interview a lot of talented graduates who worked full-time while going to school. Amazingly, many maintained GPAs over 3.5 while balancing full-time work and school. What they couldn't do, though, was take the summer off from their jobs to do an internship in public accounting. And as we know, internships are often a must for getting that first job in public accounting. This puts them at a competitive disadvantage because they didn't start out in public accounting. I'm not saying you have to work in public accounting to be successful, but it doesn't hurt. In my opinion, along with changing the 150-hour requirement, we need a path for students who couldn't do internships to still break into public accounting. Thoughts? Are quant firms being honest when they say "No finance knowledge required" on applications? 🤔👇 Having a familiarity with basic financial terms is a positive, but nothing beyond knowing the surface level definitions is needed before starting. ✅ Many firms will teach or advise you on what you need to learn. 📖 In interviews, they want to see that you have the intellectual grit and the technical ability to perform well after they educate you. 💻 🧠 In fact, at the internship and new grad level, some firms view previous knowledge of finance as a negative, as they need you to unlearn ways that you learned in academia/other internships, which can be extra work. 😔 Moral of the story: Spend the bulk of your time prepping your technical and soft skills. The finance will come later. 👍 If you're interested, peep the comments for canonical finance resources that interns and new grads often use in their educational phase! 😎

As a nontraditional student navigating the accounting field, I’ve been feeling the weight of the internship application process. Balancing coursework, past work experience in another industry, a newborn baby, and the need to stand out in a competitive market can feel overwhelming at times. I don’t fit the “traditional” mold. My path has been unique, with experiences that I believe add value—but it’s challenging to communicate that to recruiters who might expect a more linear journey. Transitioning into accounting has been an exciting decision, but the process of securing an internship feels like an uphill climb. For anyone who has been in my shoes: how did you make your unique background an asset? What strategies helped you stand out as a nontraditional candidate? And for recruiters or professionals in the accounting field—what advice would you give to someone like me trying to land that first big opportunity? I’m eager to hear your thoughts and tips. #AccountingStudent #AccountingInternships #JobHunting #CPA #CollegeStudents

According to this article out today in the FT, there has been a reduction in the number of internships and entry level positions for finance and consulting. What this article didn't mention is, at this same time, there has been a shortage of accountants entering the workforce. I would highly encourage my college and high school student connections to consider a career in accounting. There are so many opportunities out there for an accounting major and CPA - not just within tax or audit. For instance, forensic accounting and corporate accounting to name a few. As legendary investor and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett likes to say, "Accounting is the language of business." It has been a very rewarding, challenging and interesting career for me! #CPA #CoolestProfessionAround #AccountingMajor #NYSSCPA #CTCPA #FICPA #AICPA
