How did shipyards perform in 2023? 📈 Here are some key highlights extracted from SuperYacht Times' latest SYT iQ Insights article - A 20% growth in deliveries of 30-meter-plus yachts from 2022 to 2023. - Ferretti Group leads in the number of units delivered (36 yachts), closely followed by Azimut|Benetti Group and Sanlorenzo Yachts UK. - Although Lürssen delivered only two units, the yard led in terms of total GT with 16,009 GT - Looking at the total metres delivered, data shows that the Ferretti Group led in 2023 with 1,249 metres, followed by Azimut-Benetti and Sanlorenzo - Looking ahead to 2024, preliminary data from the forthcoming market report, the State of Yachting 2024, anticipates approximately 205 deliveries (compared to 201 in 2023) in the 30-metre-plus category. These numbers represent just a glimpse into the continued expansion of the superyacht industry. With an upward trajectory, there's ample space for new suppliers to thrive. Chinese authorities have revealed blueprints for China's next domestically built large cruise liner, signaling their commitment to enhancing the nation's shipbuilding prowess in this specialized domain. Following the successful maiden voyage of the Adora Magic City in 2023, this forthcoming vessel will surpass its predecessor in size and incorporate a uniquely optimized design. Enlarging its capacity by 6,700 gross tons, the ship will boast a total of 142,000 gross tons, featuring an extended length of 341 meters and an additional passenger deck. Despite a modest increase of only 19 passenger cabins, shipyard authorities are resolute in their quest to achieve a significant leap forward in China's capacity for constructing large-scale cruise liners. This commitment is aimed at positioning China in direct competition with renowned European shipbuilders such as Fincantieri, Meyer, and Chantiers de l’Atlantique in the realm of large cruise liner fabrication. It may sound as an obvious point, but it has ramifications, especially because "China, South Korea and Japan are responsible for constructing nearly the entire world deadweight capacity on order". This is a worry because, if building new vessels follows the same logic of other businesses, new building is more lucrative than retrofitting. Now imagine cutting a ship in half, seamlessly adding a new segment, then welding it back together. That's exactly what happened with the Silver Spirit, a 642-foot-long premium cruise ship. In a remarkable feat of engineering, the ship underwent a ground-breaking extension in dry dock in Palermo, Sicily, in 2018. The addition of a new 49-foot-long segment increased Silver Spirit's passenger capacity by around 12%. This innovative approach not only expanded the ship's capabilities, but also set a new standard for marine engineering and ship conversion.
