Last month, I had the opportunity to attend a 3PL Summit, which saw robust participation from numerous third-party logistics providers specializing in Less-than-Truckload (LTL) shipping. The summit commenced with a focus on Sustainability. We embarked on a tour of a Pitt Ohio’s terminal, which proudly boasts LEED certification. It was heartening to witness a collective acknowledgment of sustainability and carbon emission reduction as not only environmentally responsible but also as a strategic approach to cost-saving. The latter half of the summit shifted gears to address the reduction of back-office expenses for both carriers and 3PLs. A startling revelation was that, on average, 30-35% of LTL freight bills are excluded from automated payment processes due to disputes. The reasons for these disputes varied, including weight and class corrections by Weighing & Inspection (W&I), additional accessorials imposed by carriers for delivery execution, and shipments tendered without proper documentation in the 3PLs’ Transportation Management Systems (TMS). A significant topic of discussion was the underutilization of location services by 3PLs. These services could proactively identify sites requiring special handling, such as liftgate services, residential deliveries, or limited access locations (LAD), potentially reducing the volume of disputed invoices. This proactive approach could streamline back-office operations for all stakeholders and preserve profit margins, particularly for shippers who prepay and include freight charges on their invoices. However, the adoption of such services is hindered by complexities in quoting processes, which often rely solely on zip codes and necessitate a precise address format (e.g., ‘ST’ vs. ‘Street’). To integrate street-level addressing, substantial changes would be required in both TMS and carrier websites, which could complicate the process and deter shippers, especially transactional shippers seeking quotes from multiple blanket 3PLs. In my ongoing dialogues with 3PLs, I am encouraged to find that there are entities actively working towards reducing back-office costs. Lessons re-observed in 2024. Ask an Expert vs DIY. Go 'off reservation' decisions in the Customer procurement 'Build vs Buy' decisions for Enterprise level Logistics execution IT platforms has, is, will always be, an expensive discovery for many internal IT teams when choosing Build. The vast majority of us knows this, and yet it still happens. Repeatedly how the 1 to 10% can still influence the 90-99%, and repeat itself time again, shake my head every time. Always 'stick to the knitting' is sage advice. If you're not a software development company that build 'quality' product as your day job in your industry vertical, don't choose 'build', just choose the 'proven track record', 'best in class', 'platform of choice' or similar descriptor and work from there on the 1-10% issues.
