There are many ways to build our business. It is okay to have an opinion on what works for us. Should we listen to opinions of what works for others? Yes. We can learn new insights. We don't have to agree or do it ourselves, or it may be the greatest breakthrough in our careers. Being open-minded about conflicting ideas is a good trait. When I go to the annual Events, I look forward to listening to the speakers I disagree with. I wonder how they got that viewpoint, or what happened to them to come to this conclusion. Makes me think. If I only listen to people I agree with, I am wasting my time. I know there are many viewpoints on favourite football teams and politics. I don't agree with them all. If I did, wow, things would be boring. I love that we are free to post our viewpoints and opinions for others to see and consider. Respect conflicting points of view? A good thing. Did you know there's a key difference between purpose and mission: - A purpose statement provides the reason(s) you exist. - A mission statement is about what you do and for whom. This distinction is often difficult to extract from speaker websites or social media bios, as many tend to blend these concepts. Your purpose is your 'why' — the fundamental reason for your existence and work. Your mission, on the other hand, is the 'what' and 'for whom' — the specific actions you take and the audience you serve to fulfill that purpose. Craft a concise statement that captures your purpose. This will help you align with event themes and audience expectations. Just as importantly, it'll give you a solid foundation for declining requests from events or companies that don't align with your values and purpose. Sign #1: Everyone goes to the same church...or bathroom. A close friend of mine was recently asked to recruit and moderate a forum group for Christian men. Upon hearing the requirements (read: Christian businessmen), he responded, "You know, it strikes me that Jesus would not qualify for this group." Narrow membership criteria creates blind spots. If your group draws from a single gender, industry, or religion, it is a playground for confirmation bias.
