🗣 Social care workers feel more valued for the work they do than they did last year, but well-being and pay are still a concern according to our second annual ‘Have Your Say’ workforce survey. We carried out this survey between January and February 2024. In total, 5,024 social care workers responded, from a wide range of roles. This was an increase of almost 2,000 on the number who responded last year. 📢 First Magazine Shows: Social Care Workforce at Breaking Point Our latest report reveal the critical workforce crisis facing adult social care in the UK. With a 16% vacancy rate and rising dependence on costly agency staff, councils are struggling to fill essential roles, leaving significant gaps in support for those in need. Key findings show that: 87% of councils face recruitment challenges for qualified mental health social workers. 55% report that low wages are driving staff to leave. £292 million projected agency costs for 2023/24, up from last year. Cllr David Fothergill, Chairman of the LGA’s Community Wellbeing Board, emphasises the urgent need for a fully funded workforce strategy and fair pay for social care professionals. Chronic and systemic underpayment is placing social workers under significant financial strain and contributing to labour shortages. This is according to Australia’s largest-ever study of pay and conditions in the social and community services sector, released by the Australian Services Union (ASU) and UNSW today.
