Pleased to see my book describing the parallel societies of international students, now out in paperback. This book was a passion project written during COVID, and explains how international student parallel societies were critical in providing comfort to students during a time of crisis. The book also acknowledges that parallel societies do disconnect students in some ways from the host nation, but also explains what pushes international students into communities of people based on similar experiences and needs. #internationalstudents #internationaleducation #Australia #parallel #societies #covid #crisis #connections #disconnections https://lnkd.in/grsNT5ZK

Germany has a diverse higher education system that includes both public and private universities. Public universities in Germany generally do not charge tuition fees for studies for both domestic and international students. However, there might be small administrative fees each semester. Private universities typically charge tuition fees, which can be quite high compared to public universities. These fees are used to fund the university's operations. There are many additional differences between public and private universities in Germany. Wise advice from Darren Dahly - Abandon these rankings, all of them, & while we’re at it, h-index & impact factors too. They are fake currencies of ‘merit’, ‘value’ & whatnot. Abandon them & invest in education-learning endeavours with real societal value

Happy THE rankings day everyone! What a farce. Nothing makes me more frustrated with higher education than the knowledge that so many of you think this bullshit matters. Your subservience to companies selling you rankings that you can't possibly compete in would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic. Higher education in Ireland is grossly underfunded, so we must make ourselves dependent on external research funding and usurious fees for international students. But you might not be good at your job if you need the crutch of these rankings to attract funding and recruit international students to Ireland - a high income, English speaking (thanks colonialism!), relatively progressive country that generally embraces things like books, science, and immigrants. This should be even more true with a MAGA cult on one shore and Brexit madness on the other. Ireland should be mopping up, but it isn't, and nobody is being held responsible. Many outside of our sector might not understand that Irish universities are already spending gobs of money and wasting staff time (more money) in a global arms race to game these rankings - an arms race we can't possibly win. Madness. Ireland has two choices - continue with this waste in pursuit of eternal rankings mediocrity, or show vision and leadership by abandoning them and actually investing in what matters most. And good morning! 😃 https://lnkd.in/eHdSHUNB

Penna’s Education Advisory Board meetings provide a space for open and transparent discussions about the big issues affecting Higher Education. And right now, there are some crucial conversations that need to happen within the sector. How do prospective international students feel about studying abroad given recent political events? How can universities diversify their international student in-take? Is the UK really losing its appeal? We explored these questions in our latest EAB meeting with Rebecca Hopwood and Alex Berka from QS and have some valuable insights to share. Expect high-quality education at Sweden universities - many of which rank among the best in the world - with a high quality of life in a welcoming and inclusive society. No amount of investment in military spending can permanently end wars, and no amount of capital development can fundamentally solve employment and economic problems. We need to never stop accumulating human wisdom and exploring future possibilities in order to determine human survival in an uncertain world. Universities are relays of human wisdom and windows for exploring future possibilities. It’s hard for me to disagree with Professor Jennings’s call. The world needs to change, and it needs positive and breakthrough changes. Even if these changes may be small, it is better than repeating the cycle of history without any progress.
The world can't wait. And neither can we. 🌍 Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nick Jennings, has written an open letter to the sector asking that we collectively take a stand and change the narrative that's currently so damaging to higher education. He asks the UK's universities to turn the tide and shape a narrative that's truly reflective of the wide-ranging impact we have on individuals, regions and countries worldwide.
