As hurricanes and other natural disasters occur, CISA urges individuals to remain on alert for potential malicious cyber activity. Fraudulent emails and social media messages—often containing malicious links or attachments—are common after major natural disasters. Exercise caution in handling emails with hurricane-related subject lines, attachments, or hyperlinks. In addition, be wary of social media pleas, texts, or door-to-door solicitations relating to severe weather events. Before responding, ensure hurricane-related guidance is from trusted sources, such as local officials and disaster response organizations, including Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and DHS's Ready.gov.

A vital piece of information to keep in mind after the hurricane events: be on the lookout for increased cybercriminal activity in fraudulent emails and social media messages, such as malicious links and comments. Over the past five years, the state has experienced several debilitating cyberattacks, including a ransomware attack in 2019 that hit several public school systems, another that same year in New Orleans and an incident last year where five state colleges were notified that their networks were compromised. The costs to mitigate these attacks and recover from them is steadily rising. In FY 2020, the state paid $2.3 million to respond to cyberattacks, but by FY 2022, recovery costs had hit $14.4 million. When disaster strikes, a host of state and local agencies spring into action, including the Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana National Guard, the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, the state Office of Technology Services and others. They are backed up by federal agencies, most notably the Federal Emergency Management Administration.

In studying for ISC2 CC cert, I've learned a LOT about Disaster Recovery (DR) and a BCP (Business Continuity Plan). While it's mostly focused on cybersecurity, physical security is also, of course, a huge focus. In regards to the recent hurricanes, I saw this story on the AquaFence, a barrier system which protected a Tampa hospital during the hurricane, installed by the hospital in 2019: a perfect example of a proactive procedure in order to restore / maintain business operations. So incredible, and a perfect example of putting human health and safety first!! #GRC #BCP #DR #disasterrecovery #aquafence #isc2cc

Floods can occur unexpectedly and cause extensive damage to your business. Whether it's from heavy rain, overflowing rivers, poor drainage or even a plumbing issue, water can damage property, destroy critical documents, and ruin IT equipment. Without a plan, the aftermath can be overwhelming, leading to prolonged downtime and costly repairs. To mitigate these risks, ensure your business continuity plan includes flood risk assessments, strategies for protecting vital assets, and clear procedures for a quick response. #riskassessment #cyber #techsupport

Currently on day 8 of no power here in Houston due to Hurricane Beryl hitting the city last week, and here’s what I’ve learned about disaster recovery and how important it is within the cybersecurity risk field— You’ve GOT to have a game plan for when disaster strikes. Participate in tabletop exercises and run through every scenario imaginable. Document these scenarios and have clearly laid out plans in place that anyone can follow. What if half of your security team is without power and unable to work? Do your on prem servers have backup generators? When have they last been serviced and inspected? What if those generators go down? Always be prepared. Threat actors know that your defenses might be down during natural disasters. Make sure you’re ready! Just a friendly reminder that disaster recovery is an essential part of any cybersecurity program 😎
